I've said this about writing and art -- the goal was not to replace writers and artists with AI, the result was either:

a) *threaten* to replace them with AI, and use that as leverage to be able to pay them less

b) replace them unsuccessfully and pay them less to fix the shit the AI barfed out

We’re in a scenario where anyone who’s had their finger vaguely held up to the winds of gaming have more games than they will ever play. Be it PS+ freebies, game pass, endless humble bundles, Prime Gaming or Epic freebies.

It has muddied the waters to the point that nobody can know what they have.

Extremely cold take but I still feel that the proliferation of bundles, free deals and sales has absolutely destroyed the concept of owning a thing on digital platforms more than the fact you can’t hold it in your hands.

I can name every PSX game I’ve ever owned. I can’t name my whole Steam lib.

My cats have this meow that means “please come with me to fix this” after which they’ll lead me to the problem in question, usually a empty (or ‘empty’) food bowl or a closed door they want open. They look at the ‘problem’, they look back at me, clear message.

What fascinates me is how this illustrates what they percieve as being in the realm of my ‘power.’ I control the food, I control the door, sure, but my cats love to sit on the balcony in the sun, and it has happened plenty of times that on a rainy day they come get me, go to the balcony and show me... the rain. “Please fix this” they say. “Please get rid of the wet”

“Silly kitty,” I say, “I can’t control the rain.” I then walk into the shower and turn on the rain.

I hope this is a universal cat owner experience. Every single night he begs me to turn the sun back on so he can watch birds on the balcony. I tell him no, I cannot do that.

But I can turn lights on and off in the house and he’s fairly certain I’m just not applying myself properly here.

I legitimately didn't know they were competing with Steam and it's crazy to me that they burnt so much money on what sounds like something with very little (or wildly misguided) market research.

As VP of Prime Gaming at Amazon, we failed multiple times to disrupt the game platform Steam. We were at least 250x bigger, and we tried everything. But ultimately, Goliath lost. Here's why:

The 15+ year long attempt to challenge Steam started before I was VP of Prime Gaming, but we never cracked the code. Not under my leadership or anyone else's.

The first way we tried to enter the online-game-store market was through acquisition. We acquired Reflexive Entertainment (a small PC game store) and tried to scale it. It went nowhere.

Then, after buying Twitch, we created our own PC games store. Our assumption was that gamers would naturally buy from us because they were already using Twitch. Wrong.

Finally, we built "Luna," a game streaming service that let people play without a high-end PC. Around the same time, Google tried the same thing with their
product "Stadia." Neither gained significant traction. The whole time, Steam dominated despite being a relatively small company (compared to Amazon and Google).

The mistake was that we underestimated what made consumers use Steam

It was a store, a social network, a library, and a trophy case all in one. And it worked well.

At Amazon, we assumed that size and visibility would be enough to attract customers, but we underestimated the power of existing user habits We never validated our core assumptions before investing heavily in solutions. The truth is that gamers already had the solution to their problems and they weren't going to switch platforms just because a new one was available

We needed to build something dramatically better, but we failed to do so. And we needed to validate our assumptions about our customers before starting to build. But we never really did that either.

Just because you are big enough to build something doesn't mean people will use it

Additional if you’ll take it while it’s fresh in my head: If you succeed with the triple bonus it fills your clip AND ALSO reduces the available extra bullets to 1.

So you have chance to reload again with the same effect but if you miss you have one shot.

Suggestion for extra spice: If the number of bullets available is less than a full reload, have a third tiny point to hit. If you manage it, you not only get the power up, but the reload fills the clip.

Whether you make it so that you can reload chain is your call 🤔

I’m eager to see where this is going. Having flashbacks to 2008 when my E6600/6600GT was struggling badly to even get a steady 20fps on low.

For me it signified the true start of the Poor PC Port era of that gen, not that any in the previous couple years were particularly great.

You shouldn't buy either this new thing nor the MCC while both are under BDS boycott, of course, but Halo: CE is an unbelievably easy game to get a hold of and play on modern hardware in 2025. The MCC is basically a capstone on one of the All Time FPS Trilogies and nothing more needed to be said.
