Since I have to reintroduce myself after the move:

I’m Kat. California biologist, currently in Davis. Herpetologist. 15 years in private consulting (utility and infrastructure), mostly as a field nerd, doing surveys for local flora/fauna and passing on whatever niche wisdom I can.

CBS reporter Edward R. Murrow embodied what a journalist should be: someone who holds power to account instead of capitulating to it.

Over 70 years later, his segment denouncing Joe McCarthy’s congressional witch hunts rings truer than ever.

If you see this, post an image you saved because it made you laugh. 🪶

Hard to find a more obvious example of the journalism adage “If someone says it’s raining outside and someone else says it isn’t, your job is not to quote them both, your job is to go outside.”
davidcorn.bsky.social
A classic case of irresponsible both-sidesism from the NYT. The story is that Trump and MAGA propagandists are lying about Portland to incite a conflict, not that there are different views of the matter.

It’s #SundaySnakes! And I will never get tired of showing you this awesome Mountain Gartersnake (Thamnophis elegans elegans) hanging out on a granite peak at over 10k ft of elevation in the Sierra Nevada mountains. #herps

I’ll add that, when trying to get close to almost any wild animal, you should turn yourself sideways to change your ‘human’ silhouette and use shadows to your advantage.
theonetruekat.bsky.social
You gotta imagine that a bird having his belly blown on by a human is just like WTAF. 😆

I turned the sprinkler on for the Bushtits and look who joined in! Black-throated Gray Warbler, doing a happy. 🪶

Attending peacekeeper training today for protests. Highly recommend if you’re the cool under fire type and want to be useful and help out with keeping protests peaceful. Also known as safety monitor or marshal training. Organization and infrastructure require people, consider helping out. #protest

Eastern Black-necked Gartersnake (Thamnophis cyrtopsis ssp. ocellatus), Travis County, Texas

A slender snake stretched out along a tree root on a mossy slope. The snake has a gray head, a tan body with black spots, and a neon orange stripe along its back.

Haven't hit "Juncopalooza" yet - but they are beginning to arrive!

This first winter Mr. discovered the peanut bits on the railing the jays didn't eat and he thinks they're tasty!

This is the grumpiest looking Osprey I have ever seen.

An Osprey giving me "the look" - perhaps I was looking fishy. #birds #birding #osprey #BirdOfTheDay #HamOnt
An osprey is perched on the edge of his nesting platform, which has weathered lime green with some sort of lichen on it. He's looking very intently at me.

More rain in the desert today. I've been appreciating the mild weather and the frequent rain storms this past month. Compared to previous years, it actually feels like fall.

The animals have been appreciating the rain, too. Here's a red diamond rattlesnake I met on the trail a few weeks ago.

Perhaps you also need a weevil in size 13 trainers this evening. 👟👟👟

Big fan of this weevil's color scheme, pointy snoot, and huge feet!

No Kings 2 is Saturday, Oct. 18.

Nobody is getting paid to be there. But you can demonstrate to the world that you oppose the rise of fascism in the U.S.

Find your local protest here: www.nokings.org#map

Sen. Roger Marshall: "October 18 is when the protest gets here. This will be a Soros paid-for protest for his professional protesters. The agitators show up. We'll have to get the National Guard out. Hopefully it will be peaceful. I doubt it."

I am writing this because it has swiftly become crystal clear to me that many people have no idea what is happening or how this works. Here is a thread for non-academics to put into context what just happened to Dr. Mark Bray, a fellow historian.
