Pope Leo XIV used his first Sunday address to the faithful to call for peace. “Never again war,” he said to a roar from the crowd in St. Peter’s Square.

The #ThomistPoets started with the circle that emerged out of @stthomashouston's MFA program, but I am so excited that are growing and will soon be featuring our first writer who is not part of that circle - the poet Matthew Johnson. calendar.app.google/nmANdYMcPQRG...

his message essentially boils down to the claim that the lives of autistic children (adults too, but the quote below is about kids) are meaningless, and the rest of society should give up on them. as @novicsara.bsky.social points out, this is exterminatory language.

I need you to look at the text of RFK's remarks last night beside a description of the 1941 German film "I Accuse" and understand how calculated this is.
RFK:
Text: "Autism destroys families, and more importantly, it destroys our greatest resource, which is our children. These are children who should not be suffering like this," Kennedy said. "These are kids who will never pay taxes, they'll never hold a job, they'll never play baseball, they'll never write a poem, they'll never go out on a date. Many of them will never use a toilet unassisted."

"We have to recognize we are doing this to our children, and we need to put an end to it," he added.

It is no small thing for government workers to stage a Bartlebean rebellion.
But our democracy may depend on it.

And the moral fortitude of government workers depends on our solidarity, and the support of their unions and the few elected officials with any scrap of conscience or courage.
The Bartleby Strategy - Boston Review
Our democracy may depend on government workers, and indeed all of us, saying "I would prefer not to."

I received a heartbreaking email today: A paper in a special issue I’m editing is being retracted because one of its authors is afraid of losing their job and their legal status in the U.S. if they publish a scientific study on evolution. Yes, on evolution, nature's engine of diversity.
