I hear that. Sure that makes sense to me. I mean again, to me what’s hanging over him is the imminent death of this child, so I guess that’s what I’m reacting to. But i do see what you’re saying.

I guess I’m asking, respectfully, it doesn’t seem to me Dickens was suggesting “actually, things weren’t THAT bad for Bob, all things considered.” Given Dicken’s philosophy in most work, I’d propose to you his offering was more like “if this isn’t destitute, what the hell is?!”

I mean one of his sons has to pawn his clothes, one of his daughters works in a sweatshop, and his youngest son is going to die because they can’t afford to get him proper health care. I suppose it can get worse, but, like, not by much.
