Oh my god that is so much money to manufacture consent for something that so many people do not want, and on which they have bet so much money and infrastructure. Holy shit. The popping of this "AI" bubble is gonna be such a nightmare.
The fully open study guide assignment format is a lot of extra work for me to grade but it's honestly worth it because I get students making stuff like tarot decks, D&D campaigns, bespoke Yu-Gi-Oh cards, and carefully repurposed and photoshopped manga.

January this year was the 30th anniversary of the airing of "Past Tense." Currently rewatching and thinking of it in relation to Octavia E. Butler's 'Parables' novels. (Also thinking about how they thought that a tech CEO in 2024 would have to get *Rid* of his tattoos in order to be successful.)

One of my ongoing frustrations with software engineering as a professional practice is that LLMs were in no way the thing that caused this (though they do exacerbate it). Every company I’ve seen in my career fetishized producing solution-shaped objects for problems they didn’t (care to) understand.
"writing code to solve a problem" used to have "understanding the problem" as a prerequisite. but vibecoding allows solution-shaped objects to be produced without any of the hard-won understanding. beware of solution-shaped objects.
