Hi! Nice to meet you, I'm the faceless technician who's job it is to explain what a nanorobot is to the audience in every movie with a magic nanotech liquid metal character. You might have already met my brother, the guy who explains that EMP stands for electromagnetic pulse.

incidentally when I worked in food service I would often describe getting swamped in the lunch/dinner rush as being "in the Fulda Gap over here". which I suppose could well have become one of those kinds of terms if the mid-late twentieth century turned out just a little different.

It's funny how a bunch of everyday sayings are like, derived from the technologies of the World Wars. "Going ballistic", "the balloon has gone up", "blockbuster". Kind of feels like something you'd make up for a science fiction setting were it not, like, the real world.

A red excavator is locked in combat with a yellow front loader. There is a yellow and black diagonal striped hazard tape at the bottom, and just above the text BCV Battle Construction Vehicles in black on a yellow background.

man, ttrpgs are so great. when I was a kid I spent hours poring over GURPS & DND sourcebooks (Transhuman Space, Alpha Centauri, Expedition to the Barrier Peaks) but never... actually got to really play any because coastal essex is kind of a cultural wasteland.
