The rewards for being clever are meager and cleverness is no guarantee you’ll be right either.

more books that are not cookbooks or cocktail books should have recipes added in somewhere

Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat

Use of the phrase “master crank” lead to “master cylinder” from Frisky Dingo stuck in my head, I’m not unhappy.

Almost everyone online is unhappy and this has become my master crank theory as to why.

My big theory is that the big culprit is that a lot of people increasing think of art (or anything) in terms of what other people think of it rather than developing their own feelings. Partly it’s social media dynamics, partly it’s seeing everything as an instrument of politics.

I definitely para-knew/read/watched (emphasis on *knew*, none of my moots here are these people) people who went from pretty sophisticaters consumers of film/books/tv in the early 2010s to pretty dumb ones by the end of the decade so it was definitely a sort of acculturation.

I read a chunk of 90s-early 00s 9 Chickweed Lane and the comic strip was much better when Amos was still a virgin, there’s a lessen there for Altman.

I gotta be honest I have been historically skeptical of the idea of digital twins but recently I learned that Japan's MLIT built an entire 3D model of every building and road in the country with semantic and underlying use information, so uh... maybe less skeptical

I do think one freeing thing about pseudonymous online life is, beyond putting up a helpful barrier, is that it I’ve been free of self-presentation: my avatar images are usually thieves, secret agents, and now a “horny little devil” in shorts. I’m not trying to be bad but I don’t have to be good.

That and I think the fact that often one’s taste in fiction’s central in identity-creation (my long-term former handle on the AVC/twitter was a Trek reference and I started out only talking about Trek). “I’m good so everything I like is part of me, so everything I like must also be good.”

“Dressing for Pleasure” also an all-timer cool album name

Love this whole era of “Jon Hassell puts his spin on jazzy instrumental hip-hop”
Old sticker on the jewel case for John Hassell’s album Bluescreen, hailing it as “the rebirth of virtual cool”

I do not know why people cannot be normal about fiction, it truly puzzles me.

Not going to piggyback on a moot’s good and tasteful post about the film to say this but one of the things that makes Perfect Blue so good is the (thematically-relevant!) nudity

I’d sum this up with some take about a bunch of idiot Bismarcks propping up a dumber German Emperor but actually I don’t know anything about 19th/early 20th century Germany.

Despite Bluesky’s reputation this is the only place I saw people say “the killer was prob. disturbed and this is the sort of thing that causes societal breakdown.” I never saw this take among the many even-keeled and tempermentally conservative people I know IRL, they were all “good riddance.”

One small piece of this, I think, beyond rich guy groupcharts being an agar for elite-level brainworms is that these guys saw the response to Luigi Mangione killing the CEO of United Healthcare and started thinking hard about how people would react to their death: celebration, adulating the killer.

Recognize this is a bit crank-like for me (and I hate making threads too) but it’s more like “fastest-growing share of the donor class is socially and culturally conservative donors who are scared of economic populism and want to use it as a Trojan Horse for oligarchy.”

Who knows about a film, but with a cover like this you know this soundtrack’s going to be good
Album cover for the soundtrack of the French film Le Choix des Armes, what looks to be a very serious-looking ca. 1980 political thriller

I can’t find it but David Mitchell had a good quote on this, something along the lines on how odd it is people ask him stuff about Mark Corrigan‘s life and habits because you can see every second of Mark Corrigan’s existence, he does not exist outside of his scenes on Peep Show.
