Cville local. Overeducated carpenter. Fascists eat shit, liberation for the rest. The future's looking rough, but hope is our duty.

not sure a bio thing’s always necessary or even wise but I’m bored so here’s a summary of already shared info. I’m a staff carpenter at large institution; have a BA in philosophy and MS in a healthcare adjacent field but that didn’t work out so I rebuild Jeffersonian roofs and renovate offices now.

it’s like the mirror universe version of Fallout 4, where you may quite understandably decide to go on a rampage through The Institute immediately following the big reveal, and then when you finally exit the bloodbath Preston Garvey calls up like “I have a plan to deal with The Institute!”

oh I think it’d be great, earnestly believe that’s a core part of the overall fight

This shit right here. Antifascism is at its core, community defense. It's about protecting the vulnerable, the marginalized, the minority, but most importantly, the community as a whole.
In the absence of fascist adversaries that are as concerned with free speech, the rule of law, or polite disagreement as their opponents are, a politics of mutual aid and community self-defense remains our most powerful choice.

Anti-fascism and anti-fascists have demonstrated how we might walk this path toward a politics of empowerment, in which we take direct responsibility for our own communities.

If we are going to foster a thriving, powerful movement equal to this dangerous moment, we must not surrender “antifa” to Trump’s whims and the worst fantasies of our opponents. The health and safety of our friends, family, and society may depend on it.

To actually get a mass mobilization you need a lot more than the people who are jonesing to man the barricades

This video is everywhere because it's a hilarious visual refutation of Portland being on fire. You can't get a mass movement going without convincing the masses

so yes, this does do something actually

This literally does nothing. You are not beating fascism by dressing up in inflatable suits and dancing

Portland is leading the way. This is how you (non violently) beat Fascism. Humor and ridicule are key.

and yes, very obviously they will be happy to claim any such grandmas were dangerous antifa terrorists, and some people will believe them. but there are still limits to their control over reality.
tjsleakyroof.bsky.social
friendly reminder that “Trump Kent State’s a bunch of grandmas on live tv” is one of the more plausible endgames for our current situation. not being flippant, but people really do have to understand there aren’t any pleasant ways out of this. show up on the 18th.

On the 18th we need to be vigilant for increased violence and provocation by both law enforcement and counter-protestors, both of which will be used to try to justify more violence and authoritarianism.

They are not planning "a violent crackdown" on 10.18. What they are doing is sending a signal to their shock troops to try to cause havoc. But those shock troops will be vastly outnumbered. Go out and protest freely. Do not be cowed.

agreed, it was genuinely moving

yeah uh I am not quite sure this is the anti-Trump blow people are framing it to be.

Machado issues her first statement since being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and makes a thinly-veiled appeal to Trump for US intervention in Venezuela:

This recognition of the struggle of all Venezuelans is a boost to conclude our task: to conquer Freedom.
We are on the threshold of victory and today, more than ever, we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, the peoples of Latin America, and the democratic nations of the world as our principal allies to achieve Freedom and democracy.
I dedicate this prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause!

People seem to be falsely equating “a calm demeanor” with civility.

A slur said with a smile is still a slur. Dehumanizing language couched within “Hey, friend, agree to disagree…” is still violence. It’s not your tone that dictates civility, it’s your words, actions, and beliefs.

and a big ol thank you to PAH’s dumb ass for a perfect example of how pathetic they are with this stuff—the social worker was literally standing in line to speak next, as instructed by the Chair.

This pro gender fluidity social worker intimidated conservative speakers this evening by standing next to them as they spoke.

yeah, that was unpleasant. honestly I spent enough time losing at poker in my misspent youth that I’m willing to chalk it up to bad luck barring strong evidence to the contrary, but it was deeply unfortunate at a minimum
tjsleakyroof.bsky.social
I will say that I find it plausible that more of the TPUSA people who showed had also signed up to speak, so that may have given them better odds than the base numbers indicated, but yeah. absurd luck nevertheless
tjsleakyroof.bsky.social
yeah we really had a terrible series of rolls for the speaker selection 😐 not proportionally representative of those in attendance for sure.

ftr if I’d hit the numbers to speak. I would have spent my time talking about how shameful and pathetic it is that the people who are acting all smol bean about their right to dialogue spent the last week directing an organized, national hate campaign at Spillman.
