I *do* think it is printable because I painstakingly made it so but my testing indicates that it requires approx 0.02mm accuracy to retain the detail definition and that's not easily achievable on casual FDM printers.

So it'd either have to be scaled or use an SLA resin printer or something.

I don't have more time to spend on it right now but if I would like to change the materials on some pieces to add variety, refraction, illumination and such to better match the reference.

It was also designed to be printable so some of the work on UVs and material IDs wasn't done.

Artists and musicians and authors and creatives of all sorts aren't saying stop technology. They're saying respect our rights to not have our life's work used against us without our permission. That's it. Let people choose.

It's getting pretty ridiculous when groups are coming out saying every piece of creative expression in Canada has been scraped by tech companies and people still don't get the problem.

They hype is real. The results? Not so much.

If so called AI corps were forced to respect copyright, IP, privacy, and required opt-in I would find them at least acceptable.

I still would vastly prefer learning from others and creating myself but their worst offences would be curtailed. At that point we'd at least have a choice.

In my estimation this works better if you have a large contact surface area.

If you are dealing with small pieces you are better going with a compliant spring type mechanism.

I'll maybe share an example of such tomorrow as I'll need one to work with the chain/body connection.

Here's the piece with the cutout fins.

In general the idea is when 3D printing the tolerances change depending on printer, nozzle, filament type and filament colour.

By cutting in fins you provide a bit of degree of freedom to the parts so they can bend and still provide a snug fit.

Printed part with grip fins to aid in fitting tolerance.

I wonder if I should make the fins curved on the top and bottom as well...

It's probably better because it'll reduce the 90 degree overhangs even if they are small.

It's not done but here's the progress on the Trails in the Sky style printable Orbment I'm working on (AO render).

It should open and close properly and the individual quartz are locked in place with a rotating mechanism so they can be removed and re-ordered as desired.

We never seem to learn that we've got to insist on basics of decent behaviour before we let them move fast and break things.
