Every creator should make their own original things b/c, even if you do get somewhere with stolen art or copied jokes, etc you'll never have the skill set to make your own stuff & you'll either have to finally learn to do it on your own, or keep on stealing when you run out of ideas. Better to learn

Do we know how old the illustrator is? The example above has the mangaka similar in age to me, so would have grown up reading books with it too, if it's a more old-school thing. I'm not saying no one uses it anymore, i was more voicing surprise at not having seen it as much as I feel I used to

--off the top of my head. Would be interesting to look into though! I'll have to go through my new and old stuff and compare ages of mangaka to know for sure. (it could also be a genre thing? I read a lot of comedy back in the day, could be a comedy manga thing? neat to think over!)

My first thought would be folks who grew up with older manga & 80's & 90's manga would have seen it more and would have learned it (I grew up on those & I'll use it from time to time), but I think it's fallen out of use & younger artists might not use it as much? I can't think of a recent instance--

The first version I found discussed more, but it doesn't seem like there's an official term for it, and I haven't seen it in any of the newer "how to" books here. Modern stuff with younger artists I don't see use it as much anymore, .now that I think about it. Mostly it's bubbles with no tails

Oh yeah, it's a manga thing! I feel like I don't see it as much in new ones I pick up, but it could be generational depending on the artist. A quick search in Japanese shows ppl calling it フキダシの内側(に)しっぽ or フキダシの中にしっぽ which both basically mean "balloon with the tail on the inside"

I’ve never seen this before! An *inward-indicating* word-balloon tail (that’s the speaker’s right arm descending below the word balloon).

FASCINATING! Does this tail technique have a name? Have folks seen it used elsewhere?? I have so many questions!!! (From HIRAYASUMI, book 3, pg 37)
