Bluesky pals! I have a sci-fi graphic novel called DRIVE, & it's my favorite thing I've ever done! If you need a long, escapist read at the moment the entire thing is free to read, here: drivecomic.com
(THIS PAGE: What's New in Du Fu?)
PANEL 1: A NYX alien, a rhino-like creature with a pointed crest and a single horn on it’s nose, works on a piece of machinery.
LOCATION: Du Fu
NARRATION: The Nyxian understanding of “love” is vastly complicated. It is a multi-layered, nested conceit.

PANEL 2: The NYX working on machinery pulls down welding goggles to block the bright white light of his welder.
NARRATION: Philosophers, philologists, and cognitive linguists have spent decades trying to decode it.

PANEL 3: The NYX welding is now in the background, as another NYX carries an armful of corded plugs. His eyes are furrowed and serious.
NARRATION: Much like the Nyx themselves, it remains a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma.

PANEL 4: The NYX carrying the corded plugs walks out a doorway, eyes furrowed.
NARRATION: But the fundamental truth is this: the Nyx had come to genuinely, whole-heartedly LOVE Governor Sebastián. THE LOVED HIM.

PANEL 5: We see the NYX carrying the corded plugs walk towards a window where another NYX points at what we see. Outside the window, looking in to space, hover 3 large new rings ships, in various forms of completion. These ships looks a little fish-like, with fins jutting out the top and bottom, with aztec-like architecture. Large rings stick out the end of the ship, connected by triangular architecture. Attached to the side are large dark cannons.
NARRATION: And as we all know: LOVE IS THE GREATEST MOTIVATOR …. when building a fleet of revenge starships.

I’ve never seen this before! An *inward-indicating* word-balloon tail (that’s the speaker’s right arm descending below the word balloon).

FASCINATING! Does this tail technique have a name? Have folks seen it used elsewhere?? I have so many questions!!! (From HIRAYASUMI, book 3, pg 37)

TODAY'S COMIC: Fortune Favors the Bold!
This single-panel comic shows a big tree with forking branches - perfect for climbing. The grass below is green, the sky behind is blue. The foliage of the tree is thick and green. Standing wide across one of the forking branches high up is DIGBY, a brown dashchund. Below on the ground is OSO, a fawn pug, looking up at DIGBY.
DIGBY: Fortune favors the bold.
OSO: Gravity don’t.

A really good episode of COMICLAB: youtu.be/zr3aMZ_uhx0?...

Lots of very insightful input, and Brad * Dave make a very solid point about the very IDEA of a comics "must-read" list!

That said, what's on YOUR list?

I just finished reading the entire series from the start. Being caught up is sad.

But if you haven't read it, I can't recommend it highly enough. Really amazing blend of comic strip humor with deep world building and a great plot.

(THIS PAGE: Here’s the Plan )
PANEL 1: THE CAPTAIN, NOSH, and ORLA continue their conversation from the previous page.
CAPTAIN: OK, then, here’s the plan: We fly in with a nacelle sparking. Say we “caught a pebble en route.”

PANEL 2: THE CAPTAIN continues, as ORLA chimes in.
CAPTAIN: They won’t want to risk an explosion near the flagship…so they’ll let Cuddow and I SHUTTLE over.
ORLA: No ‘Nando? He will want ‘Nando.

PANEL 3: In the foreground THE CAPTAIN responds, while in the background NANDO raises his hand, mouth wide.
CAPTAIN: DEFINITELY no ‘Nando. We keep that boy as far away from those tesskans as possible.
NANDO: Who else LOVES this plan??

PANEL 4: THE CAPTAIN turns around to point at NANDO, looking sheepish. SKITTER floats in his chair next to him, silently.
CAPTAIN: Instead, he stays here and keeps the drive spun up. And Skitter stays ready to leap at a moment’s notice.

PANEL 5: THE CAPTAIN continues, motioning to CUDDOW, facing away. He raises his eyebrows at the mention of his name.
CAPTAIN: All while Cuddow and I shuttle over, report on the Astheet mission, then shuttle back.

PANEl 6: THE CAPTAIN leans over to talk directly to a nervous CUDDOW. CUDDOW scrunches his neck down, terrified.
CAPTAIN: WE CAN DO THIS, Cuddow. We jsut gotta stay calm, stay collected, and keep our head on our shoulders.
CUDDOW: THAT, SPECIFICALLY, IS MY GOAL.

TODAY'S COMIC: Hoisted by the wind...
PANEL 1: GRAMP, an older bald man with a grey mustache, runs past an open window while a stack of papers on an end table starts to fly away in the wind.
NARRATION: Hav eyou ever had a stack of paper get completely hoisted by the wind?

PANEL 2: GRAMP grabs after flying pieces of paper, his shirt lifting up to show his belly.
NARRATION: It’s ridiculous. The papers are bouncing around like mad, in a weird pattern of physics that makes no sense.

PANLE 3: Three small dogs bounce around a room: OSO, a fawn pug, lays on his belly with all 4 legs stretched out. DIGBY, a brown daschund flies above OSO, twisting in the air. BISCUITS, a black mutt with wavy ears and a fluffy tail, leaps off the wall. All three have wide eyes and mouth open.
NARRATION: Well congrats! Now you know what it’s like to own a small dog!
