really good documentary and a great look at late 80s black gay ballroom/voguing subculture, with a wider look on USA's consummist society and the lives these people led by banding together as a community under societal oppression. it's both uplifting and haunting...

Trying to explain that "isekai" is not just "anime fantasy" to a friend and I started rambling about Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Digimon Adventure, I insisted, he thought I was joking, no, fuck you, Last Action Hero is an isekai, you just have a narrow vision of the potential of "other world" stories

it's interesting how some of that even bleeds into the first couple chapters of the story in the game. by chapter 3, they start to go "oh shit, people are here for the horse girls, let's tone down the prominence of the trainer a bit and focus on the girls and their gay little sports stories".

Uma gets us because it is always putting the girls and their relations to each other first and foremost. It allows us to be a big part of this moment in their lives right now, but also shows how this was always their story and who they will be leading a life with in the future beyond us you know

The real draws of Uma are the relationship between the girls and the uniqueness each one of their stories holds through its threading of reality and fiction, more so than the role we play in these stories as players or viewers, or the general sports fervor we tend to have in the face of this stuff

i don't think it's as awful as it's said to be, even with the prod evidently falling apart in the last 4 eps, but i get why they went back to the drawing board and the idolmaster guy leading it left bc like. yeah. even at this prototype stage it wasn't quite working out
