Unironically, kicking the staff's favorite character, Asami to the other side the country was a very smart move. It let them be able to actually meaningfully develop the rest of the cast which was the big problem with season 1's finale where the characters involved in it weren't developed.

MASSIVE IMPROVEMENT. Not a low point in this one and Taniguchi's best outing since Code Geass and probably still is even now. It learned from every mistake it made in season 1.

Unironically, kicking the staff's favorite character, Asami to the other side the country was a very smart move. It let them be able to actually meaningfully develop the rest of the cast which was the big problem with season 1's finale where the characters involved in it weren't developed.
The oddest part of the Thrawn Trilogy is that Mara comes off way younger than Luke. He has a very older brother relationship with her to me.

The sequence depicting Stetch and his Zaku being blown away by the White Base's engines similarly makes excellent use of backlighting. Love the way it swallows the screen. The stark lighting on the reaction, effect cel layers, and the timing of the Zaku as its blown apart are similarly stellar!

Some great stuff with use of backlights too. The reflection of the Gouf's monoeye in the Guncannon's visor is only there for a few scant frames, but the transition to the blinding white light as it looms over Kai is a great creative choice.

The cel layer of the Guncannon here is alternated with either a high contrast Xerox copy or a tracing of the initial illustration done with a grease pencil.
These alternated drawings give a strobing effect that - when combined with practical light flashes - really enhances the sense of impact.
