Painted in 1906 by William Balfour Ker, it shows a glittering ballroom where the wealthy dine and dance while, below them, the poor strain to hold up the floor. More than a century later, it still feels like a mirror. Then I read the Washington Post op-ed celebrating the new White House ballroom — a tone-deaf tribute to extravagance framed as leadership. I don’t see leadership in luxury. I see a country where people still can’t afford medicine, housing, or healthcare. Maybe it’s the way I was raised. I come from a family that never admired wealth for its own sake. They distrusted greed and believed in fairness, service, and decency. What truly holds up this nation isn’t marble or chandeliers — it’s the people beneath them, working, struggling, and caring for one another.
Ker’s painting reminds us that progress built on the backs of others isn’t progress at all. Leadership isn’t measured in square footage or spectacle — it’s measured in empathy, in decency, and in how we treat those holding the floor beneath us."
