hot take maybe but this is something i actually think works about the x-men: people on marvel earth hate and fear mutants but dont hate and fear other super powered beings like the avengers because bigotry is inherently stupid and racists always come up with their own little nonsense rules.

to me the key thing about the x-men is not that they’re superheroes or even mutants but that they’re messy bitches who live for the drama, and that’s why you gotta keep it serialized. now, take that out of the equation, all kinds of things are possible.

i think they can work as part of the larger 616, but the Krakoa era really helped silo them off from whatever the Avengers and Spider-Man are doing, which was also useful.

they fundamentally do not work in film. that's why most of the x-men movies suck. the cheap, serialized, soap opera style of storytelling is as much a part of the X-Men DNA as Cerebro and the Summers family, and it just does not translate to big, expensive, once-every-five-years blockbusters.

Yep. After 20 years in this industry, I'm pretty familiar with its history, budget issues, and challenges. It's daunting work, for sure. Grateful to be part of a 50-year-old magazine that is still afloat and doing good work thanks in no small part to our subscribers, who I'm grateful for.
