yo you should read my books, if The Locked Tomb is a goth girl they're her punk friend who reeks of tobacco

The cover of The Dawnhounds, showing a fungal city, and a ship sailing into the dawn mist. "Intensely humane and beautiful ... Stronach makes the impossible look easy ... I loved it" -- Tamsyn Muir The cover of The Sunforge, showing three figures in silhouette, standing on a hillside above a burning city. "A feverish cosmic knot ... absolutely compelling" -- Seth Dickinson

Does anyone have a cool starter pack for other makers/costumers/prop builders/cosplayers or drag artists who actually make their own stuff & post about it?

(No hate to the folks who don’t, I’m just looking for more people to learn from and talk about the process with or just see cool build threads)

Bill Burr, after being paid $100,000 to eat an entire bowl of dog food: what do you hate your fuckin dog? You feed your dog crap? I don't, I love my dog you fuckin idiot, if it's good enough for him it's good enough for me. I thought it was gonna have razor blades in it but it was actually meat.

thought #1: oh changing this timeline by about ten years fixes a huge number of plot issues, sick!
thought #2: oh fucking hell I need to go back through 60,000 words and make it consistent and find and replace isn't gonna work AAAAAAAAAAAAA

a major part of your heist was "run a legitimate company for three years so the paperwork checks out", you are putting in *so* much work
understatesmen.bsky.social
there's a point where a heist is so expensive and elaborate it's like ... you know you could just do white collar crime and if you got caught the government wouldn't even give a shit
understatesmen.bsky.social
as much as I love Billionaires' Bunker ... babygirl your heist has a budget at *least* in the mid 8 figures, you drilled multiple tunnels, you rented out film sets, at the point where you've got that kinda money around you're probably a bit rich for the whole heist game

Publishers should be invested in promoting the books they publish.

it's a year after the Dominion War. The Alpha Quadrant is still in ruins. The Federation, Romulans, and Klingons have built a tenuous peace. Our crew's job is to reconnect with colonies that went dark during the war, navigating a complex political landscape ready to turn into a powderkeg.
understatesmen.bsky.social
I will never get the keys to Trek but if I did I'd do a series set on a Klingon warbird and actually go deep into their culture, they're warrior-poets, and whenever the poet part comes out it's so fucking compelling

sidenote: I'm pretty sure Quark is the only person in the show who clearly, onscreen, repeatedly, buys clothes from Garak.
understatesmen.bsky.social
while I'm here talking about DS9 clothes: quark has tboy swag right, I'm not imagining it
Quark wears a pink, green and orange jacket with lots of little squares on it. The lining is blue. He is wearing two HUGE pieces of gold jewelery and what loobs like a golden silk robe beneath his jacket Quark, Rom and Nog in the most normal outfits we will ever see them in, which kind of look like a group of Soviet farmers from an outer oblast hitting Moscow to party. This isn't even a joke I'm making, in the episode they get mistaken for Soviets. God how do I describe this. The collar and flower half of quark's jacket is blue, red and orange tie-die, and the shoulders appear to be fossil-print, I think it's fossiles? His collar is fucking huge. He is, of course, wearing a massive piece of gold jewellery. His pants are red. Quark wearing ... paisley? I think it's paisley, I'm doing my best here. Green paisley (probably) with orange lining and a tit window.

i would pay good money for the menswear guy to do a breakdown of how he knows Garak isn't a real tailor based on his fits
Elim Garak wears a red and bronze number with a sort of mishmash of stripes on it Elim Garak wears a blue and turquoise top with horizontal stripes and also a sort of vest that only covers his shoulders Garak wearing a leopard print starfleet uniform. Where did he find it? Garak, looking frustrated, wears a fetching turtleneck with animal print sleeves

god booking flights sucks so much, a million different "no I don't want to pay an extra $10" every single time

(not to toot my own horn or spoil things, just laying this down in future: I'm really proud of the Sigrid bits. Sigrid has only been mentioned in passing so far but I planned this all out in like 2015 and finally getting to it has been so good, and during revisions those bits hit me like a truck)

there's a finished draft, and I'd say it's about 50% a complete mess and 50% the best writing of my career, and The Sunforge felt more like 70/30 on that equation and I wrangled it. I can do this thing.
understatesmen.bsky.social
It's coming, it's definitely coming. I feel tremendously incentivised to finish this thing – I started writing it before I realised I was trans, and in a lot of ways it feels like the last big tether to my old life. I am cutting that goddam cord, I just need to gather my strength first.
understatesmen.bsky.social
this means (VERY loosely and unofficially) that you're likely to see the book in early 2027 rather than late 2026
understatesmen.bsky.social
there's a world where I just push through the burnout and get it done by the end of the year, but the result is destroying my own health AND a worse book – I hope you can all bear with me to give this thing the time it needs.

Dawnhounds 3 status update: draft has been in for a while, have been told edits are coming back in the next month or so. I'm suffering from pretty severe burnout and can't get to them immediately, but I've penciled in March '26 to sit down and get this thing done.

Hey all 👋 my living situation has dramatically changed. I should be fine for a few months, but if you'd like to help me make - significantly increased - rent, then any change would be greatly appreciated.
