From what I gather, there are two ways in which the Jesus movement was kind of exceptional for its time. One is charmingly weird, and the other is revolutionary inside of the discussions around the Hellenic Mystery Cults. But mind you, there was all kinds of weirdness in Second Temple Judaism...
It is this need of early Christians to make him exceptional that begins the slide into shaping the anti Jewish narratives in the gospels. Contemporary Christians will emphasize his Jewishness, but only as an exceptional, model minority Jew.
The way I heard it, his fights with the other Pharisees was part of the gig. You had arguments with your peers over religious practice, interpretations of the Law and so on. He wasn’t exceptional in that regard. Pauline Christianity’s tradition is that he was this lone voice going against the grain.

Whenever I get groceries, specifically for Palestinian recipes, I think "they know." You can easily deduce a recipe from the ingredients.

I just realized that an old friend of mine would undoubtedly say I'm "a good Lebanese" right now, because I'm dressed in various purple colours. He had this thing about Tyrian purple.

I'm not Lebanese, but that's how we met: we were at uni and he asked me to choose a colour.

I'm a writer of speculative fiction. Since stepping away from electoral politics, I'm slowly realizing that I really do need to be the one to imagine something else. My instincts have been to research, to 'do the reading,' to look for answers. But I think the point is that I have to create them.

So, Mamdani is essentially green lighting the invasion of Venezuela, is that right? (Which is weird, I mean, he's a mayor...)

That didn't take long.

I think, a lot of the time, when we call politicians "cowards" for not stepping up for us, it's actually the case that they never wanted to in the first place. Cowardice implies that they would have protected us, if only they had the courage.

I just think they lack the principles.

It never ceases to astonish me that so many liberals have this idea in their head that ICE was some honorable law enforcement agency that didn't violate human rights before trump entered office when theyve literally been doing it since the bush administration

Absolute fucking cowards. Nothing in the Supreme Court ruling comprehensively established that it is unlawful to ever include us. You could fight that case and win if you were willing to take a risk for us.

I enjoyed this book so much because I think it did exactly what Dr al-Rashid says she intended - conveyed her love of this topic in such a beautiful way for anyone to engage with. Get it someone for Christmas!
I wrote Between Two Rivers to share something I love in a way that anyone — whatever their work, prior knowledge, or exhaustion levels — could enjoy.

So many writers have done this for me on topics I’d never have time for a deep dive on (trees, the ocean, eels), and I wanted to do this for others❣️

I’m sharing a Palestinian account every day and today is Muhammad. Muhammad worked in his father’s electrical appliances store but it was destroyed. He is using his fundraiser to help his 17 year old brother Muhannad who was shot while trying to get aid at the US site and had his spleen removed

Does anyone have suggestions for SF & F in which the main character is a full time wheelchair user?

Literally asking this for a friend who uses a chair and wants to see themselves in a book.

I have the heat on, technically. I can’t adjust it. The management pays the heat, of course. I’m dressed in the hat and scarf I made, long sleeve shirt, a thick hoodie, fleece lined leggings and sweat pants, crappy cotton socks, and my dog stole my blanket. It is le cold in here!

I think this is a somewhat niche joke, but I’m pleased by it. (Part of a discussion about the various traditions that have grown up around Jesus).
Of all the different versions, I think I like the ones from some of the non canon books, and the one in the Quranic traditions best.
