People continue to call COVID advocates’ pleas for masking “unreasonable”.

Yet people who’ve already been disabled by COVID have no choice but to live with the “unreasonable” burdens of constant COVID safety.

And while we did have ppl who are both immunocompromised and protestors fight this, the able-bodied protestors who think we are so irrational to ask ppl to stop spreading disease didn’t put up a fight and left it to sick ppl to get it done.

The ppl who fought it and won this exemption are ppl who are immunocompromised, high-risk, organ transplant recipients, cancer patients, etc.

The able-bodied protestors didn’t protest this at all.

The language of the NC bill HB237 says masking is allowed to, “prevent the spread of contagious disease”.

Not, “masking is allowed if you have a health problem”.

The police are allowed to ask you for ID and to remove your mask for that reason alone, which we did not like, but they cannot stop ppl from mask long for health reasons, and we have had no reports from our advocates all over the state of maskers being harassed by police in respirator masks.

This is false, and misleading.

I helped fight this mask ban in my state and I know the bill very well.

Ppl love to use this as an excuse not to mask in NC, but I see maskers out and about all the time in my state.

Just a note that you cannot wear a mask in public in NC unless you specifically have a health issue and that's up to the discretion of the police. They don't have to believe you and if you are at a protest, it's a felony upgrade if you are arrested for anything.

That messaging got high-jacked by ppl who dgaf about high-risk ppl to say, mask to hide your face.

We warned ppl over and over again saying shit like that would get masks taken away and from the ppl who need them most and we had to fight like hell to get the health exemption put in.

Ppl originally asked protestors to mask so immunocompromised ppl could participate.

You cannot legally mask at protests to hide your identity in NC, and if more ppl had gotten involved to fight this mask ban it wouldn’t have passed.

Mask & showing ID. Once that is done, the mask is allowed to go back on.

It is not illegal to mask for medical reasons at protests, but there are caveats.

The language says to “prevent the spread of contagious disease”, not for specific medical reasons that an officer can decide are valid or not.

We do know the bill was designed to target protestors, but if protestors show ID, if police ask, just like anyone else would have to it would not be a felony charge.

The issue here is that immunocompromised ppl or anyone trying to prevent infection could get infected in the process of removing the…

Many of us who worked very hard to get the masking to prevent the spread of disease exemption added keep a close watch on how this bill is playing out in our state.

To date, I haven’t heard or seen any reports of ppl masking for medical reasons having problems, but it has to be in a medical mask.

It’s not up to the police.

Everyone in NC can mask for health reasons. It’s not up to police discretion to decide that.

I see ppl in my community masked all the time.

I teach all of my classes in an N95 because my gift from having COVID (pre-vaccine) is an autoimmune disease that destroys my kidney function. COVID gave me kidney failure, which will require a kidney transplant. What's the #1 cause of death (aside from CKD) in patients waiting for dialysis? COVID.
