I need a covid jab, a haircut, a day off and a salad and I wish someone would just come round to apply all those things to me and tidy up the flat while they're here

Today, The Word for World: The Maps of Ursula K. Le Guin opens at AA Gallery in London! Curated by Sarah Shin and Harriet Jennings, the exhibition presents a selection of Ursula's maps, including some that have never been exhibited before.
A photo of the entrance to The Word for World exhibition, with two banners hanging vertically down outside the doorway to a brick building with white-paned windows. A row of bicycles are parked in front. The banners are purple and white and say the name of the exhibition and Ursula K. Le Guin's name. A cord-wrapped rock rests on a vivid blue background next to a map of and program for The Word for World exhibition. A stack of copies of The Word for World book, which shows the title in vivid blue against a black cloth cover.

Was asked to do a questionnaire for an autism assessment of a young person and the form is from 2005, titled Asperger's assessment and using "he" throughout. Come ON.
I'm requesting an update, this is no good.

I don’t want a surprise.

As it is, I don't actually ever need them, so I wouldn't have any on me if anyone else did. Makes me happy seeing things like that, thoughtful stuff.

Here's a reminder that putting an emergency supply box of tampons in the staff toilets at work is nice. I did that a year ago and other people (no idea who) kept refilling it. Makes a person feel good to realise people got their back in little ways, doesn't it.

I mean, this is really desperate shit, isn’t it? I am a great deal more woke-sceptic than pretty much all of Bluesky but I honestly can’t be bothered to care about the National Trust putting vegan tampons in the men’s toilets and neither should you

It really really really really really really is "ok stop and think about what you just said and maybe talk to ANYBODY ELSE about it and when you got it out of your system ENTIRELY we can talk."
vivschwarz.bsky.social
And if they'll follow it up with "I just mean to say you're so brave" they can STILL WORK IT OUT IT'S NOT DIFFICULT
vivschwarz.bsky.social
I really think it's fair that anyone who says that can work out why it's taken badly. They really can

Dream Rewind is such a good skill

"To show that someone has touched this", they said.
I've been a bit worried that this time around I'll find that the children want to use AI to make their pictures look "good". But they absolutely still want to think with their hands and make their mark. Of course they do.

In every class I visit the kids all why I use fingerprints in my books. I ask them right back and this is what they suggested this week:

Because it's a circle
To make it beautiful
To show that it's real

They used to say "because they are all different". They still said that but first, "real"

Teachers: we are overstretched and struggling to connect with the students at times when they need us
Bosses: go on strike then, we got you sampled

Anyone who tells us that arts and humanities are frivolous wants to control our stories. It's as simple as that.
vivschwarz.bsky.social
To see an entire classroom start to doodle and scribble zines, form little editorial teams, make plans for publication, it's so obvious that sharing stories is how humans connect, and how we understand the world. It's not frivolous.

I think letting children make books together gets them thinking in a lot of ways that inevitably lead to increased media literacy. Telling stories helps you to recognise stories elsewhere. Who is telling them? How are they being told? And why are they being told this way?

Frog and Toad went outside.

“We can try to climb this mountain,” said Frog. “That should tell us if we are brave.”

Frog went leaping over rocks, and Toad came puffing up behind him.

Oooh maybe I can build in an extra day if I get a free stay! We're still planning. But Dublin seems very likely

Finished my North England tour and now I'll go home and lie down and hope I didn't catch covid and I'll rest and I'm not going back on tour until next year when I'll travel round Ireland, make up stories, visit schools and that.
