I wrote a little bit about the abuse DHS has inflicted on peaceful protesters and media, and the content creation the department is getting out of it.

I hope to return to Broadview asap. Unfortunately, I do not have an outlet to send me, and I doubt I can travel with Kristi Noem and Benny Johnson.

Power of the purse. Like this
ddayen.bsky.social
See this is very sharp, but it's the kind of thing that should populate the budget bill. Any illegal impoundment should result in the immediate elimination of the presidential travel budget, for example.
Alsobrooks, Van Hollen Introduce Department of Defense’s Cost of War Act

This legislation will require the Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to pay the cost of changing the name of the Department of Defense to the “Department of War” from his travel budget.

WASHINGTON, DC – As reported in Politico's Morning Defense, Senators Angela Alsobrooks and Chris Van Hollen (Both D-Md.) introduced S.2848, the Department of Defense’s Cost of War Act (DoD COW), which, if passed, will require the costs for the renaming of the Department of Defense to be deducted from the Secretary of Defense’s travel budget.

The cost of changing the name from Department of Defense to Department of War in all internal and external communications could rise to hundreds of millions of dollars. Rather than appropriating millions of more dollars and wasting Americans’ taxpayer money, this bill would force the department to take the money from the Secretary’s travel budget first and then from the travel budgets of the military service secretaries.

It's just absolutely terrible.
I was just listening to a discussion about the state of farms right now and it mentioned that probably a good deal of why a lot of farms survived after the last stupid tarrifs was covid stimulus: youtu.be/Haz3jo0YHD8

Kristi Noem coming out and saying ICE will be at the Super Bowl and suggesting it's because of Bad Bunny is propaganda. CBP and ICE (DHS) work security at EVERY Super Bowl.

She is playing y'all.

This is what flooding the zone with bullshit looks like. Ignore what they say and watch what they do.

“the federal constitution’s suddenly fluid protections” is 🔥

The Hawaii Constitution offers safety to Hawaii’s people that exceeds the federal constitution’s suddenly fluid protections,” Hawaii Justice Todd Eddins wrote in a recent ruling, taking a shot at the U.S. Supreme Court.
Hawaii Supreme Court Expands Rights of Defendants, and Once Again Rebukes SCOTUS
The justices ruled that Hawaii’s constitution requires police to record interrogations. And they vowed to protect due process for Hawaii residents—unlike, they said, the Roberts Court.

I guess my question is how do you enforce that?
vvalkyri.bsky.social
I get the argument about stick to healthcare (omg I am afraid to look at my ACA options) but "Congress needs to make it so Trump stops illegally doing [all of the everything] especially in terms of funds Congress allocated and we otherwise can't trust any deal you make" is important.

“Dems could switch postures to the one I’ve advocated:
Sorry, we simply can’t vote for a deal that you will abrogate and use to violate the law.
Suddenly Democrats would be the ones on reasonable ground…” @brianbeutler.bsky.social

If we had insisted on a partisan approps bill, with no negotiations, that we knew Rs couldn't support, does anyone think for a second that Rachel Bade would have blamed Republicans for the ensuing shutdown.

Thing is, DEMOCRATS shut the government down. Not Republicans.

what about a 7 week CR is partisan beyond Dems refusing to support it. be specific.

Michael Linden @MichaelSLinden - 15h
I can answer that easily. If the CR included provisions to prevent partisan rescissions and unilateral cuts it would be clean.
Those are not provisions that would have been necessary for it to be clean in a previous time (even the last Trump admin). But they clearly are now.
Linden is completely correct about the real reason Democrats can't cave, but you'll notice it has nothing to do with health care. A thousand versions of this exchange are happening across the political elite this week, and if through that process of argumentation, Democrats belatedly recognize that they need to change the basis of their demands, then the ball will be in the GOP's court. It's getting pretty

I totally missed the advanced 48 Trump nominees at once bit.
muellershewrote.com
No. They don't need 60 votes. They can change that rule with a simple majority like they did 11 days ago to advance 48 trump nominees at once. bsky.app/profile/muel...

Y’all. Republicans are FINE with poking holes in the filibuster. They did it ten days ago so they could confirm 48
Trump appointees at once. Don’t let them tell you they can’t pass a CR without Dems. www.nbcnews.com/politics/con...

Shaheen sends out signal for surrender from Schumer Dems. She will vote 4 blank checks to fund the Trump regime as long as she gets a “promise” that there will be vote on healthcare.

This is probably how Schumer’s caucus will surrender bc he doesn’t hold his member accountable 4 surrendering.

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., is declining to rule out supporting Republicans’ short-term spending bill if leaders promise a vote on extending Affordable Care Act subsidies later this year. “There are a number of ways to get this done that should satisfy both sides,” Shaheen, a longtime sponsor of related legislation, told Semafor on Wednesday, following a roundtable with small business owners who rely on the subsidies. “I’m not going to draw a line in the sand and say it’s got to be this way or that way.” Her comments point to an off-ramp for lawmakers seeking to avert a government shutdown next week: Senate Majority Leader John Thune told CNN the GOP’s proposal “enables us … to have discussions about other issues, like the premium tax credit issue.” Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., predicted 10 Senate Democrats would vote for the funding bill on Monday. Meanwhile, the Office of Management and Budget ordered federal agencies to prepare mass layoff plans in the event the government shuts down.
