Been playing a build of the game @threeohfour.bsky.social is putting together.

He's only been in production for about 3 months and I'm already blown away.

This is shaping up to be one of the most delightfully weird games Wadjet Eye has ever made.

I think we are misunderstanding each other. I hate this stuff as much if not more than you. That GDC has summits on this stuff does not surprise me. It’s the sheer celebration of it (literally having a robot stomp on a symbol of the industry) that adds a huge extra scoop of gross.

This feels very different. Gaming has always had trends, and I don’t blame GDC for focusing on what’s popular. I wouldn’t even blame them for having a summit on AI games (as much as I would hate it) but this promo *celebrates* in a way that I find deeply troubling.

Usually a tech innovation like this is scares the folks in power and is eagerly used by the masses. It says everything that this tech is being fully embraced by the people in power and the masses (overall) despise it.

I haven't gone since 2019. The extortionate cost of the event - not to mention the cost of just existing in the area! - have made it harder for me to justify. I do miss seeing all my friends there. I will go if Old Skies gets into the IGF, but otherwise... probably not.

AI is gonna stay, and the potential for good is staggering, but it needs to be regulated *now* because it’s being used for more harm than good.

I’m not so much of a Luddite that I can’t accept that AI can be useful as an aid or a tool for creatives. It’s when it’s used as a *replacement* for creatives that turns my stomach. There’s a lot of good things AI can do, but that’s not primarily what it’s being used for.

Creatives of all types are all worried about being replaced by robots. Showing an ad where a literal robot stomps on the GDC logo is more than a little tone-deaf.

GDC should be a place where human creativity is celebrated. This ad seems to be celebrating the exact opposite.

Shame on you guys.

I’ve always loved GDC. I went every year for 13 years. I’ve made some of my closest friends at GDC. I met my wife at GDC. I’ve struck life-changing business deals at GDC. I’ve always been inspired, motivated and rejuvenated by GDC.
