battles are like. active time battles now, where you have to pick your target on the field specifically by holding down the left trigger. doing this both shows you the level and HP of your target and also is context sensitive and the only way to use moves anymore

despite it all i've never felt like gamefreak was a studio trying to keep costs down, i think they just have to be both spread too thin and beholden to toy/anime schedules. hearing in the leak stuff that some teams have like ~40 people on them for a while feels wild for projects of this scope

for some reason despite them getting better at this za has one of the most barren options menus in series history

anyway i always figured it was less a matter of cost and more a matter of filesize; nintendo tries to keep shit small and that much voicework would add up fast

my stance at this point is "they could afford to get voice acting but considering they'd need to get like 15+ dubs considering how many languages they localize in it basically guarantees some of them will suck bad" and as such i prefer just letting the voice i made up do all the talking

i still cant believe that in the year 2025 youtubers still do that thing where they mispronounce a word from another language several times before going "haha wow that sure was weird to say and probably wrong lol" it's a recorded video!! you can literally just look up how to say words in 2 seconds.
