Advice for winter blackouts
Sleeping
Bring your mattresses to the floor to insulate against ground chill. To further trap heat when sleeping, place a table over the mattress and put blankets over it to create a tent/pillow fort. This is also a good solution if you live in a place with open floorplan.
Sharing bed and blankets will let you share your own body heat
Remember that synthetic fabrics are made of plastic, so be careful if you’re handling an open flame. When synthetic fibres burn, they have a big flame, smoke a lot and can melt to your skin. Clothing
Prioritize warm feet, hands and head. This is where the majority of body heat is lost, and if you’re cold here all of you is cold. Using a scarf to cover your nose and mouth will also make the air you breathe warmer. If you don’t have gloves, use socks on your hands too.
For the rest of the body, work with layers.
Start with thinner layers closer to your body, preferably cotton or bamboo. More layers are better than one thick layer as the air pockets between them is what’s keeping you warm.

Warm drinks are your friend. Tea, coffee, powdered soups, broth, warm juice et cetera will warm you from the inside.
Avoid alcohol. It expands your blood vessels so you feel warmer, but in reality, it just cools you down faster.
If you don’t have a fireplace, do not light a fire indoors. This will lead to carbon monoxide poisoning as the fire steals all the oxygen in the room. Symptoms to watch out for are headaches, weakness, dizziness, nausea or vomiting, shortness of breath, confusion, blurred vision, drowsiness, loss of muscle control, and in worst case, loss of consciousness.

Conserving heat
Pick one room to keep your household in. Smaller is better as it’s easier to heat up. If you have a fireplace, this is your first choice, but if the room is too large to heat efficiently you might still have to choose another room
Cover all doors and windows with blankets. This will keep the heat in the room. Avoid leaving the room as each time the blankets are moved will let out heat.
