And AI being unciteable and unreproduceable does not help.
wishda.bsky.social
That’s also how the NYT responds to criticism. “If everyone is criticizing us, that means we are doing something right” is an old media cliche.

Just from personal observation, I think there are strong links to the male
loneliness epidemic and the way that hanging out with the dudes became perpetual roast sessions.

Young dudes insulting each other for laughs as the default way of bonding leading to older men with no friend groups.

It’s eugenics. These kids are meant to die along with those who are “too weak” to survive measles.

The alarming aspect of this deliberate "anti-woke" algorithmic biasing of LLMs from an educational perspective is our institutions all bought in to an imaginary of innovation, then got locked in to enterprise contracts, and now the models are being recoded so they undermine educational values
marcusluther.bsky.social
Genuine question: for those enthusiastically pushing AI tools into every part of our education system—what checks/guardrails are there around algorithmic biases like this?
hypervisible.blacksky.app
The administration “is currently pressuring OpenAI and other AI companies to make their models more conservative-friendly.”

Lost Science is a new NYT series of accounts from scientists who have lost their jobs or funding. You can send your story to the Times here www.nytimes.com/2025/10/08/c...

They have dipped in that well before with success with Claudia Gray’s Lost Stars, but it’s been a decade since that was published.

Had a friend who was genuinely charming, warm, and funny. Also a huge stand-up fan who liked “edgy humor.”

How that worked out in the long run is that he eventually found the right joke to make everyone in his life pull back from him. Motherfucker would just verbally knife people out of the blue.

I have pulled back from a lot of athletic hobbies over the years after I hurt myself. The physical injuries always took way less to recover from than the financial costs of healthcare and lost work.

A lot of “Love my road bike. Can’t afford to ride it” experiences.

That leads to lost social ties.

Vertigo Comics lettering, in particular, took so much inspiration from Sim.
wishda.bsky.social
I feel for Gerhard. He still drew the entire book, but it destroyed their business ties and friendship.

Sim didn’t present himself or his work that way for a long time, and Gerhard tied his income into producing a book that went from a seminal comic to an industry embarrassment best forgotten.

A boss is a friend who can be told by their boss to find a reason to fire you, and then they aren’t your friend anymore.

Hierarchical family-based social structured cannot prioritize competence, since they need to weather eras of good and bad Family Fathers.
wishda.bsky.social
Because conservatism is about subservience to the hierarchy, no matter if you agree or like the outcomes.

Every Red state small town and county is chockful of powerful Trump figures making bad decisions, and the outcome is that they stay rich and live to see their kids become the new leaders.

Like, the idea of friendship as a form of “exchanging graces” turned into perpetual hazing.

The more I read about the weird esoteric cult roots of Silicon Valley tech culture, the more I suspect the progressive trapping were operationalized lessons from Bay Area cults.

Bind people to the job with shared values, then separate them from family and support groups through overwork.

The GOP is signaling to LEO to handle this like a Black Bloc protest. We could see tear gas and batons used on crowds that contain little children.

People should still go, but there are signs that they need to come prepared for tear gas at least and have escape routes in mind for the vulnerable.
wishda.bsky.social
What’s different about this rhetoric is that this type of moderate protest has always been hands-off when it comes to police violence. They are the kind of marches where you bring the kids and grandpa and plan to go to the brewery after for lunch.

The great thing about being a Trumpist is that Speaker Johnson can make the most absurd, evidence-free, ideologically-extreme claims imaginable about the democratic opposition, and media outlets will note the aggressive nature of his claims ("slams") and amplify his lies in the headline.
politico.com
Johnson slams the No Kings protest march scheduled to take place in DC next week as the “hate America rally” that would draw “the pro-Hamas wing” and “the antifa people.”
wishda.bsky.social
With the left there is usually a degree of realistic and conspiratorial suspicion that the displays of virtue are hiding misdeeds.

Less “virtue signaling” and more “The man who wrote ‘All Men Are Created Equal’ was a slave owner.”

One thing I have realized is that the far right understands liberal society better than most liberals. They have studied its systems and are attacking load-barrel pillars of modern societies.

I have made peace that phone posting and no edit button means that half my posts contain some borderline gibberish.

We are at the ‘07 stage where the financial trades are diverging sharply from the mainstream media messaging.

It’s how I knew about subprime loans, tranches, the housing bubble, and the coming crash months before it happened.

And you get the same flat-out disbelief when you talk about it.

Many of the Silicon Valley wing are ecofascists who think they can kill their way out of climate change mattering to them.
