#ProyectoSaguaro #GasExportation #MexicoPacific Research shows that “ship collisions are now a leading cause of death worldwide for large whale species.” Will Mexico risk the beauty and biodiversity of the Gulf of California to let foreign actors get rich shipping dirty Texas gas to China?
The Harms of US LNG - From Calcasieu Pass to Puerto Libertad - Oilfield Witness
The U.S. is working hard to get the rest of the world hooked on expensive and dirty liquefied natural gas (LNG) and is getting plenty of help from the banking system in other countries like Japan. The...

9/ We hope this research sheds light on the dynamics of pathogens in #naturalEcosystems and the often-overlooked #wildCropRelatives and #WildHosts. Let’s keep exploring these untamed systems! 💡 #PlantPathology #EvolutionaryBiology

8/ Thanks to @newphyt.bsky.social , we shared the abstract in Farsi to honor Iran, where the pathogen was collected, and the contributions of our Iranian co-authors. 🌍✍️

7/ Shoutout to Vic Flores for the stunning microscopy images showing similar disease progression timelines on wild and domesticated hosts. Beauty truly is in the eye of the observer! 🖼️

6/ Genome analysis of 42 Z. passerinii isolates revealed accessory chromosomes and host specialization driven by strong population structure, as supported by cross-virulence assays. 🧬

5/ We identified Hordeum bulbosum and Hordeum murinum as new hosts for this pathogen. In fact, we established a fascinating pathosystem using H. murinum from Armenia, a neighbor of Iran. 🌱

4/ Cultivating isolates from wild hosts was a learning curve. Unlike lab-adapted isolates, these wild samples didn’t grow as readily under standard conditions. But persistence paid off!

3/ Back in our lab in Plön, Germany, we isolated and confirmed Zymoseptoria passerinii—a fungal plant pathogen closely related to the notorious Zymoseptoria tritici, which infects wheat. 🌾

2/ During field collections in northwest Iran in 2018 & 2020, Alireza Alizadeh & Fatemeh Salimi found signs of Septoria Speckled Leaf Blotch on wild grasses—a disease last reported in northern USA in 2004!
