Such a classic.
Center-right parties that start aping far-right parties harm or even demolish themselves in the process (LR, the Tories, the VVD, etc etc)

Years of aggressive polarising rhetoric seem to be hurting the PP and rewarding vox.

This is usually what happens. Feijoó would do better to return to his earlier concilating persona

More soldiers may sound impressive, but as you now know, it is not the end all of everything.
At this point it is not more soldiers Russia needs, it is more heavy weapons systems, and they can't produce enough of those to offset system-lossrate.
Oops!

By increasing the number of soldiers you are diluting the average weight of fire for Russia.
And soldiers need to eat, they need transport, and that increases complexity of logistics.
Whereas a howitzer doesn't eat, and it is serviced by few soldiers needing transport.

That means including range, speed of shot, brisance, hit-rate, volume of fire-rate, etcetera.
But, as a snapshot of the state of the Russian army, and where it is headed, it is good enough for an interested civilian.
Did you notice something interesting?

By now the Average Weight of Fire per Soldier is 1:100 compared to when the war started.
Yes, this is a simplified picture, but it is giving a good inkling into the state of the Russian army.
But to be useful for a professional you need to make it more complex.

Ukraine over the next 2.5 years demolished large numbers of Russian equipment, and back in November of 2024 the numbers of fielded heavy weapons systems in Ukraine started to drop.
At the same time Ukraine gained almost air supremacy, so less bombs got dropped.

A year into the war Russia's weight of fire had dropped by a factor of 10.
At the same time Russia's army had grown by a factor of 3.
This means that the Average Weight of Fire per Soldier was 1:30 compared to the beginning of the war.
Now?

No army ever has had such a high average weight of fire per soldier as Russia did during the 3 first months of the war.
They ran their howitzer's so hard that the barrels ran red and exploded, and they just continued.
Until they ran out of their Soviet stockpiles.

Russia fired 5 million shells into Mariupol, and during the first year, they used 40 million shells in total across all of Ukraine.
For the first time we saw the "Soviet God of War" in full action. It was "Peak Russian Army".

Before the Siege of Mariupol the City had 425 000 citizens, and it took Russia less than 90 days to completely destroy it until it had to surrender.
This was done mainly by artillery, and by extensive use of dumb bombs dropped by aircraft.

As Russia attacked Mariupol we expected Russia to follow the Soviet military doctrine and manuals.
They were as brutal and efficient as can be and relied on massive firepower.
And we saw that at Mariupol.

1 million bullets can potentially hit 1 million targets and 8 AASM can't hit that many targets.
Quite right, but we are going for brute destructive force here.
And there's a reason for that.
Let's talk Mariupol.
