In a week where we're discussing big european nights, league games taking place at unsociable hours and inevitably a new club partnership its worth reflecting on the genesis of football's commercialism...and that it started at Spurs!

Here's my latest episode about Irving Scholar

On this Spurs day in...1994

Further signs of early progress under Gerry Francis with this credible 1-1 draw at Anfield.
Neil Ruddock's own goal gave us our equaliser much to the added joy of all those Spurs fans who'd booed him throughout having left us the previous year!

Looking for a much needed warm Spurs nostalgic glow right now?

They don't come much better than reliving the 1991 FA Cup Semi-Final!

Coming up this week on @spursnostalgiapod.bsky.social I was joined by Mihir Bose to review Irving Scholar as chairman.

Mihir co-wrote Scholar's book so is perfectly placed to critique one of one of the most fascinating and divisive characters in Spurs' history and in English football in the 80s.

On this Spurs day in 1989...our inconsistent start to 89/90 continues with this 2-1 home defeat v Derby. Dean Saunders once again a menace.
youtu.be/J0PGekykw5g?...

What is that Derby away kit all about? Why have an away kit that is black and white stripes when you have a white home shirt?

On this Spurs day in 1995...a 0-0 draw at Chelsea extends our unbeaten run. Ruel Fox with our best moment:
youtu.be/0eF12zTMpCU?...

I was listening to this game on my transistor radio while watching Crimson Tide at Lea Valley cinema!

Where have you most desperately followed a Spurs game from??

On this Spurs day in 1993...

We draw 1-1 v Wimbledon with a Barmby goal putting us ahead but the evening was infamous for the horrific attack by Fashanu on Gary Mabbutt. Our captain was inches away from losing his eyesight.
Fashanu had the audacity to stay down injured!

On this Spurs day in 1990...

Gary Lineker loved a goal against Norwich. 2 more in this 2-1 win over Norwich.

It was a welcome distraction from what was starting to unravel off the pitch with Venables now linked with a move to Real Madrid.

If it's any consolation we've been through this all before and come out the other side (relatively unscathed). Some memories of 90s games from this day to come (including a Highbury defeat!)

90 - Norwich H 2-1
93 - Wimbledon H 1-1
96 - Arsenal A 1-3
97 - Palace H 0-1

Details of all to follow...

New bonus episode of @spursnostalgiapod.bsky.social out looking back at our away games with Arsenal in the 90s. It’s just 15 mins.
It’s John Hendry time! 💪

On this Spurs day in…1994

After the chaos of his home debut against Villa 4 days earlier Gerry Francis was able to secure our first clean sheet of the season in this 0-0 draw at home to Chelsea.
A back 4 of Austin, Mabbutt Calderwood and Campbell looked far more solid!

In this Spurs day in…1991

Days after Gary Lineker announced that he’d be leaving Spurs and English football at the end of the season we welcomed Sheffield Utd for what would surely be a comfortable home win? 😬

A lesser mentioned Keith Houchen goal against Spurs from the 80s as he equalises in this 1-1 draw for Coventry at WHL.

This game was supposed to have been played on the opening day of the season. Do you know why it had to be rearranged?

Newcastle are such an annoyance who always seem to enjoy getting one over us directly or indirectly.

They’re like the irritating kid at school who just happens to be good friends with the girl you want to ask out but you know he’s slagging you off to her.

On this Spurs day in…1989

We had to rely on a late own goal to secure a draw and avoid an upset at Tranmere in the League Cup. Gazza had put us 1-0 up.

Bonus episode coming up on @spursnostalgiapod.bsky.social later today about away games at Arsenal in the 90s.

Without looking it up how many of the 10 games we played at Highbury in the 90s did we lose?

Can you name our 5 individual goalscorers?

On this Spurs day in 1998…
A rare home win against Nottingham Forest with second half goals from Armstrong and Nielsen.
We won just 2 of 9 home games against Forest in the 90s 😳

On this Spurs day in…1992.
We drew 0-0 at home to Aston Villa. We also drew 0-0 at Villa Park and it’s the only time we’ve recorded a pair of 0-0’s against the same opponent in the premier league era 🤓

Unsurprisingly there’s no footage - did anyone go and/or have any memories of either game??

On this Spurs day in 1995…we became the first away team to win at Middlesbrough’s new (Cellnet) Riverside Stadium.
Chris Armstrong scored his 5th goal in 6 games to record a 1-0 win!

On this Spurs day in 1989. We faced Crystal Palace and Nigel Martyn, the first ever £1m GK, but still scored three to win 3-2.

It was the first time we’d played ‘Team of the 80s’ in the league since 1980 when Terry Venables was their manager. Strange how these things work🤓

Latest episode now out...

John Sheridan is a really lovely man and I got a huge amount of my interview with him.

It builds neatly on the chronology following the 91 FA Cup Final but John's personal story is also a compelling one.

On this Spurs day in 1988...A cold day in South Yorkshire for this televised 1st Division game at Sheffield Wednesday. All but the centre circle and penalty area were covered in snow - cue the famous orange ball!

Paul Stewart scored both our goals in this 2-0 win.

Following on from the dramatic 91 Cup Final tomorrow’s episode of @spursnostalgiapod.bsky.social is an interview with the brilliant John Sheridan who discussed his own sacrifices in getting Gazza fit. John also spoke about the chaos at the club in the late 80s and his own unique career as a physio.

On this Spurs day in 1994...With Ossie gone Gerry Francis takes the team for the first time.

The performance and outcome so poignantly Ossie as we fall to a 90th minute winner from Saunders having valiantly chased a winner ourselves having fought back from 3-0 down!

I’ll be recording @spursnostalgiapod.bsky.social season 1 finale episode later with @notthatmilo.bsky.social and @damejulie.bsky.social as we explore the seismic moment when Sugar sacked Venables in 1993.

What are your memories of that episode and what unanswered questions do you have?
