New York is in a mental health crisis, and jail is NOT mental health care.
Thousands with mental illness are jailed instead of treated, fueling repeat arrests and record-high suicides.

Join us tmrw Oct 10 at 9 AM across 250 Broadway for a rally & Senate hearing on the Treatment Court Expansion Act

If private plaintiffs can’t enforce the Voting Rights Act, communities with limited English proficiency can be left unprotected.

MSIs are engines of social mobility for low-income Asian American students and other students of color. Slashing funding for these schools undermines students’ access to a quality education.

The Trump administration announced it is cutting federal education funding for minority-serving institutions (MSIs)—colleges and universities that enroll large numbers of Asian, Latino, Black, or Native American students from low-income families. www.theeduledger.com/leadership-p...

The Trump admin detained nearly 500 Korean and Latino people from a factory in Georgia — its largest ICE raid to date. Take action now to support the affected communities and demand accountability on behalf of our immigrant communities.

Immigrants are 19% of the labor force, yet they are often denied the same rights as workers born in the U.S. All workers regardless of immigration status have the right to their wages, the right to organize, the right to safety, and the right to be free from discrimination. #KnowYourRights #LaborDay

NEW: Broad coalition of 70+ orgs applaud Governor Kathy Hochul for granting pardons for 13 New Yorkers and urge her to use her clemency power in these urgent times amidst Trump's anti-immigrant deportation agenda: www.immigrantdefenseproject.org/70-organizat...
Snippet from the letter: "We are now in a moment of daily abduction of immigrant New Yorkers by masked federal agents who funnel our community members to prolonged detention and, as you noted, deportation without due process including to third countries and far away prisons known for egregious human rights violations. We also are watching the continued ongoing humanitarian crisis in the New York state prison system, where medical neglect and denial of basic dignity must be addressed with urgency." Snippet from the letter: "As these harms continue to unfold, you can be the beacon of hope that New Yorkers need in a time where courage and leadership are most needed to protect the most vulnerable. As in Sammy’s case and many others seeking pardons, you are their last line of defense against Trump’s cruel practices, and often the last hope for New Yorkers suffering in the ongoing state prison system humanitarian crisis. We implore you to see in these New Yorkers what others will not: their dignity and humanity."

This case comes amidst the racial gerrymandering by Republican legislators in Texas. “Against the backdrop of other states trying to dismantle majority-minority coalition districts, it is crucial for NY’s highest court to reject racist election schemes,” says Patrick Stegemoeller, AALDEF.

The brief recounts the importance of coalition districts for protecting the political power of racial minorities—especially Asian communities and smaller groups, whose ability to effectively advocate for their issues is often only possible in tandem with others.

Despite making up 40% of the town, no Black or Latino person has ever been elected to the town board. “For too long, Latino and Black residents in Newburgh have been denied fair representation and been disenfranchised,” says Cesar Ruiz, LatinoJustice.

With SCOTUS’s decision in Trump v CASA, the administration has been emboldened in its campaign to strip children of the Constitutional right to birthright citizenship. Despite several injunctions issued by federal courts, some children born in this country are now at risk of becoming stateless.

Yesterday, AALDEF monitored 40+ high-density Asian polling sites, observing and addressing confusion around provisional ballots, voter registration, and the ballot itself. With the intro of ranked choice voting, language access is more important than ever to protecting the Asian American vote.
