In the quantum potentiality labyrinth, your PC may (or may not) be participating in a quantum orgy at any time. A successful search will collapse the wave function and confirm if you are currently within a secret passage. Old school problems require old school solutions.

With Masters of the Universe being turned into a film now is the right time to convince people that Carcosa is the He-Man TRPG. #osr

Wonderful stuff from Trent. I think one of the dirty secrets of TRPGs is that everything is an optional buy. (And I say this as someone who obsessively hoards books) Remixing and borrowing for different tables and groups is how this whole thing started.

High fantasy cosmopolitanism always mildly bugs me as it is used as a way of sidestepping the fantasy racism trope, but as these cosmopolitan fantasy spaces are pattered off modern cities they bare all the marks of that racism existing. It just seems no one wants to talk about it in world? #trpg

Disco McCoy is cooler than your favourite character (unless it’s Guitar Wolf who is definitely cooler)

Little January update for Melsonia. Watch me do an amazing job of burying the lede. TLDR: January is killing us. Share it around, help a small TTRPG publisher out.

Phew, what a month! And it's not even over yet. Yikes! I'm sure you don't need to be reminded about tariffs but here we are anyway. New ones incoming next month, so if you are a USAian and you were lo...

I think many of the issues people have with 5e are a good example of gameplay friction in the wrong places. At it's heart it is pretty simple, d20 + bonuses vs TN, no circumstance modifiers just Adv/Dis. You can get the whole game on a double sided A4 page (and people have)
I'm not usually one for "5e is the worst thing ever", but today I facilitated a D&D club for 12-13y/o...

It really hit me how counterintuitive and confusing it is compared to nearly everything else I've ever played. The kids had no clue what was going on

I’m online discourse avoidant but I do have a hot take that is becoming sadly more relevant each day.
“Whiteness” and “White” are concepts created by and adjudicated by White suprematists. Nobody else.

I know the new films are (mostly) good but just thinking how Beneath the Planet of the Apes and Escape from the Planet of the Apes are two of the wildest francise sequel films ever.

I’m not one for much fan worship but Tom Baker was a very important figure in my childhood. He has had a turbulent relationship with the show, as well as a turbulent personal life, but assuming stuff for him behind the scenes are ok for him I’m so overjoyed to see him so happy at 92

We also sadly said goodbye to my little buddy Kepler who lost his fight with feline lymphoma. He was the quirkiest, smartest little black cat you’d ever meet. I was blessed to know him for even the short time we had. Rest up in the great beyond buddy.

I ran some games this year too. The two year Babylon 4 (5) LARP I was running for Caligo Mundi came to a satisfying close, it was a little game idea that became very very big quickly and we had a great team and great players. (caligomundi.com) #ausLARP

I think this is 100% on the money and that's not necessarilly a good thing? Total Eurogame victory was terrible for Boardgame design (imho) as now even bad games feel overdesigned and dull, not like whacky rides with interesting interactions that a better designer can build on as inspiration.
Pardon my board gamer brain, but OSR vs story game discourse in big 2025 is funny to me because it just reads like “euro game vs ameritrash” arguments in that both are primarily products of forum discourse from a time where I was still in the womb. You should try playing new games, it’s fun!

Omg I forgot to even put one if the key ideas in the original post. The character sheet has a gear shift!
I do have a half written Mad Max TRPG, based on the 1979 film. Players would play the crew of a Police watchhouse, they would deal with crimes both petty and violent while society slowly collapses around them. What is the breaking point? When do you cease fighting to maintain the institution?

Me: I’m working on a Disney inspired TRPG
Interlocutor: Oh I love Aladdin and the Lion king. That’d be great!
Me: No, the films directed by Walt Disney. Getting real vibes from The Skeleton Dance.

The term "Ghibli aesthetic" is nonsense branding that aims to sell a vibe and not actually engage with a creator or their work. They are not selling something inspired by or interfacing with Hayao Miyazaki or his work, they are selling you a knock off plush Totoro at a fleamarket. (Cash only pls)
The team behind Obojima not only don’t care about Ghibli outside of the aesthetic, they also fully do not understand it. They’re either complete buffoons or actively bad people and the truth likely lies in the middle.
