We’re in court today fighting for Mohsen Mahdawi and Rümeysa Öztürk.

Mohsen and Rümeysa were released from ICE detention on bail after they were detained by the Trump administration in retaliation for their speech in support of Palestinian human rights.

The First Amendment protects all of us.

NEW: We filed a brief in support of a lawsuit against the Trump administration’s unprecedented attacks on academic freedom at Columbia University.

The First Amendment doesn't allow the president to force a university to censor its teaching, research, and faculty to align with his ideology.

Mario Guevara has been detained by ICE for more than 100 days in retaliation for his reporting — even though a judge ordered his release on bond.

An immigration court just ruled Mario could be deported at any moment. ICE must free him now.
Free Mario Guevara
ICE detained journalist Mario Guevara for over 100 days for his reporting, despite orders that he be released on bond. Now, an immigration board has issued a final removal order - and he could be deported at any minute.

Yesterday's Supreme Court decision endangers our communities and subjects people to immigration stops simply because of the color of their skin, occupation, or the language they speak.

This fight isn't over. Our right to live free from racial profiling is fundamental.

As the administration continues to threaten the fabric of our democracy, we urge the courts to continue safeguarding our rights.

In a victory for Californians – and everyone who has rallied against Trump's unlawful military deployments, a federal judge rejected the administration's assertion that it could deploy troops anywhere government personnel or federal property could be harmed.
The Fair Representation Act (AB 690) will finally fix the problem by banning flat-fee contracts.

☎️ The Senate Appropriations Committee is currently debating whether to advance it. Call the Chair, Sen. Caballero (D-Fresno) at (916) 651-4014 to express support for AB 690.
Eight of the 10 counties with the highest incarceration rates in the state use flat-fee contracts exclusively, including all of the top 5.

Flat fees pay lawyers the same amount of money no matter how much work they do on a case. The less time they spend, the more lucrative the fee.
‼️Tell CA Senators to end the privatization of public defense.

California allows counties to privatize public defense via flat-fee contracts with private lawyers or firms, leading to worse representation, higher incarceration, and less safe communities.
Yet instead of listening to community input and lawmaker concerns, the policy lobby is trying once again to pass a bill that will lock in the unchecked and abusive ways that police use attack dogs.

‼️Tell your CA legislator to vote NO on AB 400:

Take Action: Stop Bill to Codify Police Dog Violence
Police attack dogs have left thousands of Californians with life-altering injuries, many of them Black, Brown, unarmed, or in mental health crisis. Now, AB 400 would lock in the same dangerous standar...

Public records from the past few years show that out of the hundreds of Californians who were disfigured by attack dogs:
⚠️Most were unarmed,
⚠️About half exhibited signs of mental crisis before the dog was released,
⚠️And many were suspected only of a minor offense, or no offense at all.
SB 707 "would be a step toward government solely by teleconference, in which members of the public and press might never see meetings in person, never be able to approach board members with questions or suggestions..."

Editorial: California lawmakers seek to undermine Brown Act open-meeting law — again
Purported modernization of the Brown Act is a confusing mess that would shield committees from public contact.

3️⃣ In Santa Ana, the City threatened to prosecute a faith-based charity for providing aid to unhoused people at a church resource center.
2️⃣ In Fremont, the City Council passed an ordinance making it a crime to hand out resources like food and water earlier this year. The ordinance was reversed only after public outcry.
Tell your CA legislator to protect the right to help your community members. Despite the rising cost of living, some cities in California have moved to criminalize acts of compassion:

1️⃣ In El Cajon, 12 people were cited simply for sharing food with unhoused community members.
