They put a 5-0 whupping of one of the worst teams in ligue 1 in the water 🤪

(also bears pointing out that someone like Ekitike, for example, also had significantly less talent playing *against* him most of the time at his former club, while we're here. but his main running mate is at City now, too, so 🤷‍♂️)

yeah that's usually true of the guys who didn't pan out as well - complex game!

20 g/a is good and all but it's a far cry from 47! and there's a lift from him getting that money for your Gakpos as well IMO. But can't ignore Trent (6 a), Diaz (18 g/a) and of course Jota (9 in just 13 games)

Yep and just like Sterling, Rooney is often thought of crapping out young despite making 420 PL starts and 81 in the CL over 16 (!!!!) seasons,

Totally agree, think Messi/Ronaldo broke people’s brains a bit. Rooney seems to be highly respected still despite going to DC at only* 32
adam.cannonstats.com
you'd certainly think so, but then nothing is a given. all those big expensive transfers in football history were expensive for a reason

I've been saying since the summer that Liverpool are just an English Espanyol, and there you have it

yeah I do think that is part of it for sure

We also talked about Michael Owen last night, another considered someone who burned too bright, too fast, but consider:
-9 seasons with 10+ league goals, 7 with 15+ G&A

If you can get 18+10 at 17, 18+5 at 18, etc., is it better to meter yourself so you can play more @ 28? I'm skeptical
adam.cannonstats.com
People talk about him hitting the wall "early" because he's 30 and looks pretty washed but if both ended today his career would have included more longevity than, for instance, Mo Salah, who entered year 11 (11.5?) of playing what you'd consider top-level, star-caliber ball this season

Something I started to poke at as we discussed this topic last night -- ever notice accolades get minimized when players hit the age curve?

e.g., Raheem Sterling
-322 PL starts over 13 (!) seasons
-62 starts, 88 apps in CL, t-13th most g+a career
-8 seasons w/14+ G&A

not exactly a quick flameout

This topic came up on the Discord from discussion on the Transferflow pod.

It was more about other players and the minutes load but it was a good excuse to dig into and talk about Saka more.

We don’t dive in position by position, but focus more on attackers and Saka/guys with earlier starts specifically. We do go down the position change/evolution path a bit as well

Since the moment Scott first called it a meta-focused episode I had been holding this joke in, it was bound to happen

I don’t see any other logical conclusion here - spent the most time leading but didn’t finish…that’s how it works right?
adam.cannonstats.com
23% of the time losing so far for Arsenal maths out to around 145 minutes, ~85 of which were against City and ~50 against Newcastle. So some small sample size theater going on here

Which teams have held a winning position the longest in the Premier League this season, and who has spent the most time trailing?

We look at every team’s time spent in each game state across 2025-26 after seven matchdays.

I'll be honest: When you don't win as much as you'd like, seasons can get long. But feedback like this, completely out of the blue, remind me why I wanted to do this in the first place 🥹

Definitely sprinkled some of that in throughout but I'm planning that!

Part two of re-writing strikers, which includes my review of striker moves this past window and a look ahead at good targets to watch, is now up! Now if you'll excuse me, I've got some formulas to go fix..

In writing about striker transfer history I was reminded that the year Ekitike moved to PSG, they also signed both Kolo Muani and Ramos. Now he moves to Liverpool and they sign Isak. Seems like bad timing
