In this research article, we examine how Chinese companies strategize and act within the politico-legal environment in Kyrgyzstan's contentious mining sector. Based on interviews with legal and institutional actors, we fill an important gap in knowledge about Chinese businesses.
and want to know how Chinese companies adapt to Central Asia, this article may be relevant for you. In spite of China becoming most important economic actor in the region, little research is done in practice to understand how its entities work in local circumstances.
Friends, I am very excited to share my new article "Mining for Norms: International Extractivism, Chinese Business, and the Indeterminacy of Compliance in Kyrgyzstan", co-authored with @mostowlansky.bsky.social.

If you are interested in Global China,
Have you been to Bozjyra, Mangystau region in Western Kazakhstan? Part of the ancient ocean Tetis. It's simply mind blowing. Mad Max, Furiosa and Dune are crying ))

What a great and intellectual keynote on radical politics against authoritarian and semi-authoritarian social contracts in the Central Asian context by @adoolotkeldieva.bsky.social at @helsinki.fi’s Populism conference organised by @emiliapalonen.bsky.social’s team.

Happy to share my new article looking at institutions of higher education & research in Central Asia on the example of OSCE Academy. In particular it highlights the perils of institutional and financial insecurity in a region that is heavily affected by geopolitical conflicts lnkd.in/ebHTXwYe

Now that PM Akylbek Japarov left his position, it's a good time to flag my new article, that appeared in OSTEUROPA Journal. In this article, I assess populist promises that Sadyr Japarov gave to protesters in Oct 2020 & how his government later fulfilled them. Ican send an Eng copy!
Although rumors of his imminent departure circulated for the past year, it will be a hard job for any new PM to match Japarov's high speed, dynamism, and decisiveness.

Akylbek Japarov leaves from his position of Prime Minister. Interesting situation for Kyrgyzstan. He enjoyed a popular nickname "brain": 9% GDP growth, the tripling of state budget, enhanced tax collection under his administration 24.kg/english/3142...
