Agreed, these decisions are often opaque. My impression of these engagements over the past two decades: sector trends, “fashions” and ambitions in Bern blend with priorities and desires in Dushanbe. It’s not very coherent for a reason.

The New York Times is the first to put out comprehensive estimates on the cost of a year without U.S.A.I.D. and they’re higher than I thought:
- 1.65 million deaths from AIDS
- 500,000 from lack of vaccines
- 550,000 from lack of food aid
- 290,000 from malaria
- 310,000 from TB

Killing children is by design, I'm afraid. "Pro-natalists" like Musk claim they aren't racist, but their pressure to have children is solely focused on white women, while they back policies that literally kill of non-white children.

He's a eugenicist.

Opinion | Musk Said No One Has Died Since Aid Was Cut. That Isn’t True.
A journey through the front lines of global poverty shows that when the world’s richest men slash aid for the world’s poorest children, the result is sickness, starvation and death.

Yes, this is definitely the first case in human history that a nation bleeding out under attack has a knife by its throat from yesterday’s biggest friend in need that went bonkers and switched to Al Capone-style racketeering amid war.

It's testimony to a materially, politically and socially highly complex country in which an existential war is top of the agenda but in which people's lives are defined by many more fine-grained aspects of mundane existence and far-reaching histories. Have a read!

Friends and colleagues here have spent months sleeping in hallways and shelters because of incoming Shahed drones. They hover around and eventually get shot down over urban areas. It's often air defenders using machine guns on residential building rooftops. In Kyiv, a privileged place in comparison.

Plenty of heated debates around types of missiles and escalation outside Ukraine. Viewed from Kyiv it all seems fairly superficial and catering to rather abstract fears of people far away. What people disconnected from Ukraine often seem to miss are degrees of much more mundane, but grinding terror.
