Ultimately they had both a set of concrete political principles and a preferred aesthetic style of contrarian left-punching centrism, and as America took a reactionary turn that made that untenable they decided to abandon those principles to preserve their style and so marched on to the right.
Its wild seeing r/neoliberal conditionally turn into a conservative sub, depending on what kind of headline is posted. There is quite literally no tenet of the sub that they won't become fervent detractors of in the reply section of an article titled "Democrats need to acknowledge the _____ problem"

Chotiner: how can you defend genocide?

Me: actually, I don’t.

Chotiner: you’re anti-genocide? Are the rest of your politics this good?

Me: the rest of my opinions on politics and media.

Chotiner: impressive. I also see you’re quite tall.

Me: yes. I love reading and Clairo.

Chotiner: wow.

There was a black guy with public service experience running as the left-liberal YIMBY candidate (Zellnor Myrie) and they backed a hedge fund manager who wanted ICE on Riker’s and posted AI edits of Mamdani instead, so I wouldn’t rule out the NY New Libs as not racist just yet.
wait so

CA New Libs: racist brainrot in the 12th dimension
NY New Libs: landlord brainrot in the 53rd dimension

am i getting that right? what do we even have these "new" "libs" for?

Everyone wants a class of people below them to feel better about themselves. To that end, the fact that some people on the bottom of society seem to oppose measures for greater equity isn’t surprising; they see it as permanently shutting off the path that might allow them to have that.

Regime Change Is Still Illiberal
Few words have become more loaded in the vocabulary of American international relations than ‘regime change’.  As documents regarding the origins of the Iraq war became public, it became clear that it...

My father-in-law is a liberal. He is insanely gifted. We were looking at a welfare state together years ago and I asked him what it would cost to build it today. I will never forget his answer…

It's very funny how the few surviving neocons who haven't regressed to Trotskyism love being like "this administration wants to overthrow the Venezuelan government to strike a blow to the Russian-backed Axis of Autocracy, which they are neutral to positive on."

My most "edgy" historical opinion is that it makes no sense not to count the Vichy government as the successor to the Third Republic, like come on, 67% of the French Deputies and Senators voted for the 1940 Constitutional Law (and when you only count parliamentarians who voted, it's 88%!).

This bit from Baldwin's essay The Price of the Ticket is deeply moving to me, but in particular the third paragraph.

Opposition to the West Germany-Israel reparations plan in the 1950s saw opposition from the Zionist right and the Israeli left. Here MK Moshe Sneh (Mapam) accuses the West of setting up a neo-Nazi government in Bonn and calls his party's support for the USSR basic Jewish self-preservation.
