"Leaders of electoral authoritarian regimes use unfair elections to deceive their citizens, create the illusion of popular support, & legitimize their rule...nefarious tactics include repressing the opposition &... manipulating the law, media, electoral administration, & campaign resources."
How to Compete in Unfair Elections | Journal of Democracy
Opposition movements often boycott rigged polls rather than risk legitimizing an autocrat. It is usually a mistake. Here is the playbook for how one opposition seized the advantage.

Federal prosecutors in Texas are seeking to convict protesters on "domestic terrorism"-related charges. The chilling implication: anything that feels "at odds with this administration’s policies could be considered domestic terrorism," says @rlevinsonwaldman.bsky.social.
Trump wants to prosecute anti-fascists as terrorists. This Texas trial will test his power.
A July 4 shooting at an ICE detention center could change the way the federal government prosecutes activists.

Medicare for All would save $450B a year.

Every dollar spent on food stamps generates $1.50-$1.80 in economic activity.

Each dollar going to low-wage workers adds $1.20 to the economy overall.

It’s not about what this country can or can’t afford.

It’s about priorities.

Restricting abortion has NOTHING to do with saving lives for the politicians who salivate for war, support ICE's arbitrary executions, cut child and maternal health funding, and permit polluters to emit substances that increase miscarriages and child deaths. It's about control over women.
Researchers have found that 6 of 10 abortion restrictions — bans on Medicaid funding for abortion, mandated waiting periods, 2nd-trimester abortion bans, ACA marketplace insurance coverage bans, biased counseling laws, and ultrasound requirements — were linked to higher rates of maternal mortality.
Laws restricting abortions linked to rise in 'abhorrently high' maternal mortality rates
Rising state-level abortion restrictions in the United States were linked to a similar, parallel rise in maternal deaths from 2005 to 2023, according to research presented at The Pregnancy Meeting. ...
