Every few months now I re-read this "Who Goes Nazi?" piece from 1941 and am blown away by how it captures the people we are dealing with 80 years later.

The standard you walk past is the standard you accept. By not condemning and expelling Tuberville from the party, Republicans have essentially endorsed and normalized his repugnant views. He speaks for every Republican.

Important thread. I would also just note that it underscores how incredibly vital Bluesky is. It may be the smallest major platform, but it's the only one that hasn't been corrupted by fascists. It's crucial that it be protected.
There’s a specific mechanism in authoritarian movements that we’re seeing play out in real-time across American media and tech. It’s a simple rule: "If we cannot co-opt it, we must destroy it."

It is the logic of "scorched earth." It's the logic of the Nero Decree and it's happening right now. 🧵

And finally, the assault on Section 230. This is the endgame for independent speech.

If you repeal 230, you don’t hurt Google or Meta—they have the lawyers to survive. You destroy the small forums, the independent blogs, the dissenters. You make the cost of speaking the truth too high to bear.
How Democrats’ Attack On Section 230 Plays Right Into Trump’s Censorial Plans
Like clockwork, lawmakers are once again rallying around the idea of eliminating Section 230. That Republicans are leading this charge is hardly surprising—repealing Section 230 is explicitly laid …

Same with TikTok. We were told it was a "national security" threat. But the forced divestiture wasn't about data privacy.

It was about transfer of ownership. Handing the algorithm to politically safe tech oligarchs ensures that the last algorithmic feed not under their thumb is brought to heel.
Trump allies to control TikTok under new US deal
Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order laying out a proposed deal for a US version of TikTok that would see Chinese ownership reduced to 20 percent and put

Likewise, the "Compact for Academic Excellence" and the attacks on the Ivy League aren't about reform.

Nuance and critical theory are enemies to a movement built on myth. Since they can't force Harvard to teach their alternate reality, they will tax, sue, and harass it until it ceases to function.

Read this thread.

It's exactly right. But also note on the internet related stories—the banning of TikTok and the attack on Sec 230—Democrats happily helped MAGA accomplish their goals and people have cheered it on.

Democrats trying to destroy 230 are not helping you. They're helping Trump.

I don't object to billionaires existing. I just think they should pay the same percentage of their income in taxes as teachers, nurses, and janitors. This seems entirely reasonable to me.
Ever wonder how some billionaires can get away with paying such low tax rates compared to working class Americans? Here’s their secret playbook and what we can do about it.

Victor is right. Promotion of the word "wokeness" allows right-wingers to pretend their racism and sexism is issues-oriented rather than hate-oriented.
Conservatives rebranded bigotry and every time the media uses “wokeness” as a euphemism they are helping a movement that it quite literally erasing the history marginalized people’s role in American life.

If the American regime meddles in European affairs there are two good ways for Europe to deter it. 1. Help Ukraine to cut Russian oil exports. 2. Threaten to dump the dollar. Both actions will drive the international price of oil up (in USD prices).
