Since we have had a big boom to bsky let me reintroduce myself.

I am Aisha Burton and a new PI at Cornell Micro. Currently on maternity leave but my two research techs are keeping the research going 🙏🏾. My lab is interested in studying small proteins and how they impact stress responses in bacteria
That’s fair! I see both when referring to growth but OD600 is about 85-90% of the time.
Another question #MicroSky! When presenting growth curves, do we use OD600 or A600. We are technically measuring the Absorbance so….. Let me know what you think. My lab is still new enough to implement the change before we start publishing.
Followed back! I had so many new followers 😮‍💨
Hey #MicroSky! I’m at Phages and like any great conference, cool science ideas come up. Does anyone have a lead on how I can get the E. coli Keio collection pre-mixed for a screen?? Send me a DM 🙏🏾
Currently in my last week of maternity leave. Excited to get back to work but hate leaving lil man at home.

Final call for early abstracts is tomorrow!
The call for abstracts is out for ASM Microbe 2025! I am convening a session on metal homeostasis in environmental microorganisms! We have two great invited speakers lined up and room for 3-4 oral abstracts.

Please consider submitting to this session!

Thank you! My research tech, Mark Watson, created it.
Thank you! Yes, yes! I will.

Here's a starter pack of Black Microbiologists. A work in progress as people are migrating over from other platforms. Let me know if you want to be added! go.bsky.app/EcYiqNV
Have fun!! Having major FOMO!
Hopefully, I can go next year and won’t be on maternity leave with a 4 week old.

I posted this a few days ago on this site, but it was before the great Twitter Exodus of 2024. Lousy timing, I suppose... 😁
Here it is again, for all the #microsky folks who may have missed it. It's a pretty nifty story, >8 years in the making!
Phenotypic heterogeneity may be ACTIVELY generated (not just passively by stochastic gene expression) in a population of sporulating #Bacillus subtilis, says Updegrove et al.
A new sporulation pathway with 2 proteins of previously unknown function...

Altruistic feeding and cell-cell signaling during bacterial differentiation actively enhance phenotypic heterogeneity

I saw TOMY autoclaves at ASM. It isn’t a tabletop/bench top but does have a small footprint. Considering getting one but don’t have the space in my lab right now.
Thanks Félix!! 🙏🏾
Yes! That would be awesome!

We're having a bit of a tough quarter over at Skype a Scientist. I'm writing grants nonstop over here but won't know if it's working for a couple months.

The collapse of social media has made our business model of many small donors beak. In the meantime, your support is VERY appreciated.
We serve classrooms with connections to scientists for free.

We put science into people's lives with public art & pop-ups.

We help scientists connect with their creativity to communicate science.

We rely on YOU to do this work.
Monthly support keeps us alive ❤️

As it’s #BlackinMicro Week let me reintroduce myself:

Hi!! 👋🏾 I am Aisha and a 5th year post doc at the NIH and will be transitioning to Assistant Research Professor of Microbiology at Cornell starting Jan. 1st. My research looks at how small proteins help regulate bacterial stress responses.
I think Howard is trying to change that within the next year or two.
Thank you! Now on to the post doc pubs 😅
Whoo hoo! It’s out!
