Ain't got a source for this but I feel like your work will really hit the nail on the head with this one. People constantly panick about how unsafe things are while crime declines. Their only "proof" of this usually is that there are more poor people around. Figures... being poor is not a crime!
This is actually a crucial part of a paper I’m working on that says that nonwhite and poor/houseless people aren’t experienced as human beings but as visible signs of disorder and crime & that’s why concerns over crime since 2020 are going to always fall back on these populations.
This has become an area of academic research, that people often mistake the profound discomfort of visible poverty with risk of violent danger

While there is something to be said about avoiding relationships of a purely tranaactionsl nature, at the end of the day, negotiations truly are the essence of relationships.
Compromises, promises... nothing more than different forms of negotiation. To live amongst others is to negotiate.
