Chapter One
Life wasn’t a song. Even the bloodiest song of vengeance and betrayal had the beauty of its tune. Life was a copper clip dreadful: cheap, gory, and lewd.
Smog grasped at the pocked windows of the swaying citylink transpod. William O’Shaughnessy traced the shadowed outline of downtown Camira on the glass, tight grime-tipped gloves leaving a trail in the condensation. It trickled down, tears of a dying city unmourned by the parasites who sucked her dry and left her husk to rot. It wept in a way Will couldn’t. The hollow ache in his chest had long since drained him of tears.
