Hi Nicolas. Thanks so much for reaching out and for the kind words about the book—I really appreciate it!

What I find fascinating is that both games were released prior to the Game Boy Color yet neither can be played on the DMG. The bootleg can’t be inserted far enough, so the power switch won't slide all the way on (not unlike Nintendo’s design for GBC cartridges). But they work on the Game Boy Pocket!
A bootleg Game Pak inserted into the Nintendo Game Boy showing that cartridge is too tall for the manual power slider to fit into a notch in the plastic. A pink Game Boy Pocket running Donkey Kong Land 3. The screen is backlit and shows the game in four shades of teal.
alexcustodio.com
The ROM is, in fact, Donkey Kong Land III, which was developed by Rareware and published for the Game Boy in 1977. But the sticker on the face of the cartridge seems to be the one used for Makon Soft’s Super Donkey Kong 3 bootleg, an unlicensed game based on Donkey Kong Country 3.

I have two of these, which I bought at a flea market in Lisbon when I was 12 years old and didn’t know any better.

The cartridge labelled The Incredibles actually houses Titus’s 1997 Superman game (a tremendous disappointment at the time). The Donkey Kong 3 cartridge is even more confusing.
Two gray bootleg Game Boy cartridges. One includes a label for The Incredibles while the other says Donkey Kong 3. The word game is debossed at the top of the cartridge.

I’ve felt a lot more murderous playing Monopoly than I ever did goofing off in Among Us.

This massive review doesn't once mention that it's funded by Palmer Luckey, and it's not an oversight, considering the author (and site owner) is ignoring comments about it. This is the same author who gave Tommy Tallarico a big fluff piece to promote his Amico scam. I'm detecting a pattern.

Need a reason to attend the last panel of CGSA? @hanine.bsky.social and I are presenting a paper on the troubling fact that you can cook squid in front of your octopus villagers in Animal Crossing and nobody bats an eye!

Come for the slides full of memes, stay for the critique of anthropocentrism.

While I'm not surprised to see Yuzu down, I'm sad to see 3DS emulator Citra go down with it. The 3DS was discontinued in 2020 and the eShop in 2023. On April 8, Nintendo will close their online features, leaving few avenues to play or study 3DS games as they are now.

New modding guide! This time, @michaeliantorno.com and I tackled the GBA Consolizer.

This was the most complex mod we've done so far and a great learning experience. Here, we document the process and reflect on the mod's technical and aesthetic priorities.
