During the Sept. 30 military-style raid on a South Shore building, a man heard a knock at his door. It wasn’t an ICE agent, but a mom and girl pleading for help. He let them in and hide under his bed. 🧵

A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to “study the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most “conclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

"but it's everywhere now so we just have to accept it's the new reality" motherfucker we can just stop putting it everywhere! we did it with asbestos and CFCs and lead-based paint or petrol and make-up with arsenic in it! if everyone is using something and it's bad, we can choose to stop!

this book is quite deservedly a bestseller. if you spend a bunch of time online (this is literally all of you, dont lie) you owe it to yourself to read about how the internet has affected our language.

So apparently, when you write a book for @riverheadbooks that becomes a bestseller, they make a single-copy print run leather-bound version just for you?

l am stunned and honoured.

Israel has just arrested Greta Thunberg and many others.

Statement from the Global Sumud Flotilla:

“People of conscience have been abducted. The flotilla broke no laws. What is illegal is Israel’s genocide, Israel’s illegal blockade of Gaza, and Israel’s use of starvation as a weapon.”

it’s my birthday today, what a beautiful opportunity to preorder my book! early reviews have called it “a work of striking honesty” and said its “razor-tipped essays” are “shimmering with a poet’s sensibility.” 🐳🩱🐬

The cover of the book "Post-Man: Essays on Being a Neurodivergent Non-Binary Person" by Alex Manley, with stacked text above reading, "Happy book birthday!", along with the book title, subtitle, and author's name. Below, footer text lists the publisher, Arsenal Pulp Press, and their website, arsenal pulp dot com.

On the centre of the book cover in large bold letters is the book title, “Post-Man.” A bobby pin rests on top of the title. Below the title is the subtitle, “Essays on Being a Neurodivergent Non-Binary Person.” The subtitle is in black except for the words “Neurodivergent” and “Non-Binary,” which are in shades of dark teal, appearing to fade into the background. At the bottom is the author’s name, “Alex Manley.” The background is a teal colour with faint impressions of flowers. Photo of Alex Manley.

Horrific: Doctors Without Borders is suspending medical work in Gaza City due to Israel's violence, including airstrikes & tanks less than 1KM from their facilities.

Comes same day Netanyahu used his UN speech to scold dozens of nations for accusing him of committing war crimes.
The intense Israeli forces offensive in Gaza City, Palestine, is putting our staff and patients at risk.
• The unacceptable level of risk has led us to reluctantly decide to suspend our lifesaving activities in Gaza City.
• Israeli authorities must immediately guarantee unhindered access and security for humanitarian organisations operating in Gaza City.
GAZA - The relentless Israeli offensive in Gaza City, Palestine, has forced Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to suspend vital medical activities in the area due to the rapidly deteriorating security situation. The situation includes continued airstrikes and advancing tanks less than one kilometre from our healthcare facilities. The escalating attacks from Israeli forces have created an unacceptable level of risk for our staff, forcing us to suspend lifesaving medical activities.
"We have been left with no choice but to stop our activities, as our clinics are encircled by Israeli forces," says Jacob Granger, MSF Emergency Coordinator in Gaza. "This is the last thing we wanted, as the needs in Gaza City are enormous, with the most vulnerable people - infants in neo-natal care, those with severe injuries and life-threatening illnesses - unable to move and in grave danger."
While large numbers of people have fled south due to evacuation orders, there are still hundreds of thousands of pople in Gaza City, who are unable to leave and have no other option but to stay. Those who are able to leave face an impossible choice: either remain in Gaza City under intense military operations and the deterioration of law and order, or abandon what's left of their houses, their belongings, and their memories, to move to areas where humanitarian conditions are rapidly collapsing. At the same time, partially functional hospitals across the Strip are overwhelmed due to severe shortages of staff, supplies, and fuel. Patients also face enormous obstacles reaching care, often arriving late and in critical condition.
Last week alone, and despite the mounting offensive, our clinics in Gaza City carried out over 3,640 consultations and treated 1,655 people with malnutrition. We have also treated patients with severe trauma injuries, burns, as well as pregnant women and others requiring ongoing medical care who are unable to leave the city. This shows the scale of medical needs. Although we have been forced to suspend our activities in Gaza City, we aim to continue supporting key services in Ministry of Health facilities, including Al-Helou and Al-Shifa hospitals, while they continue to function.
Access to and the provision of safe drinking water, food, shelter and care is increasingly restricted. People in Gaza City have been repeatedly and relentlessly bombed. They are exhausted and are being deliberately deprived of the essentials needed to survive.
We call for an immediate halt to the violence and concrete measures at the necessary scale to protect civilians. Israeli authorities must immediately guarantee unhindered access and security for humanitarian organisations operating in Gaza City, and acceptable conditions for the safe and sustained delivery of medical care and humanitarian aid, conditions that are clearly not in place today.

At the top, dark text on turquoise-ish background: "As a child, my faith led, before long, to philosophical inquiry. I remember grappling with the idea that it was impossible not to sin, probably around the age of ten or eleven. What if I was really, really dedicated, though?" At the top, dark text on turquoise-ish background: "I felt like a bad gay. How bound up in shame and otherness I was, that Pride itself felt alienating. And yet Halloween, in many ways its vibe apogee, I was equally repelled by, a spinning magnet caught between two forms of queerness I could not manage to hack." At the top, dark text on turquoise-ish background: "To have a body, to be alive, is to be subject to capitalism. It touches us before we even come out, a probing finger, a bias that shapes an argument, a framework that demarcates what is and isn’t possible. Casualties of the conditions in which their mothers lived." At the top, dark text on turquoise-ish background: "The truth is, there has always been homoerotic desire in hockey, the way there is any time enough men gather together, like a sort of queer holy spirit. Whenever two or more gather in my name, I am there. It may not have been spoken aloud, acted on, or acknowledged, but it was there, the way queerness has always been, uninvited yet irrepressible.." Canada Post “lost” 1 billion dollars last year?

How about, “it cost Canadians 1 billion dollars to have a national postal service” which works out to costing about $25 a year per person (population of Canada in 2024 = 40 million). Seems like a pretty reasonable cost to me.
julieslalonde.bsky.social
"Canada Post is on track to lose money" Hum. Duh. It cost less than a toonie to send a letter across Canada.

"Canada Post is a service and not a business" was common knowledge until late stage capitalism brain rotted most people into think if it ain't making money for shareholders, it's failing.
