I've done 7 episodes of #StoryofMinglan and am glad to say I'm totally invested in the story. The pacing is just right with angsty twists and turns; the acting is great (little Minglan is a shining star and I adore the grandma!)& the themes are promising.

I finished #Chinesehistorical epic #MingDynasty1566. The actor who plays the Jiajing Emperor made me hate this Ming Emperor with a passion! There may be a little humanity in him, but absolute power kills it, making him a callous megalomaniac brat! He's worse than Zhu Di!

Have you ever heard this song sung by Teresa Teng? It's rendered from Song poet Su Shi's popular lyric poem called 水調歌頭: 明月幾時有. He wrote it at a Mid-Autumn Festival to express his longing to reunite with his brother.

I had read Confessions of Catherine de Medici and had learned about the background of this stretch of French history. Marguerite de Valois (Queen Margot) is Catherine's daughter and is apparently maligned by historians! So, badmouthing women in power doesn't only happen in China!!!

Of the Four Dragons, the Green Dragon of the East (called Ao Guang) is the most talked about, as he's involved in a wrangle with #Nezha because the latter killed his third son Ao Bing! This #myth is retold in #TheHeavenlySword with a follow-up story! The Green Dragon is a baddie here! Curious?

they didn't use genderbending (which is a form of parody) to discredit this Chinese classic.

These novels are all published by the white-dominant corporate publishers. In the grand scheme of things, the POC authors are just pawns. The real problem lies with the white supremacist English book industry.

When we read fantasy fiction rooted in a foreign culture, we would want to learn about that culture, right? But when readers pick up those Chinese fantasy novels, all they get is ridicule of Chinese historical/literary figures, or ersatz Chinese mythology, or mockery of traumatic Chinese history. 😏

No, She Who Became the Sun has no "xia" themes. It could be categorized as historical fantasy, though. The problem is the genderbending, which is a parody of Chinese history.

Those two series in the main are just urban fantasy loosely connected with martial arts, with faux Chinese settings. For marketing purpose they claim to be wuxia stories.

Unpopular opinion: I wouldn't count the Green Bone Saga series and the War Arts Saga series as #wuxia stories, as such stories are indigenous to Chinese culture and history and are typically set in real ancient China, have "xia" themes & the main characters are skilled martial artists.
