5 years of the digitox seminar series 🥳 It's now practically an institution for those interested in digital disconnection research

A must attend in Jan 👇

A strong agree. At the same time, it might need some of those specialized initiatives to establish replications more and for other journals to get on board. So I might say we need both

ReplicationResearch.org is now open for submissions!

Submit replications and reproductions from many different fields, as well as conceptual contributions. With diamond OA, open and citable peer review reports, and reproducibility checks, we push the boundaries of open and fair publishing.

New work from our lab 💕
Finally a paper with all my lab besties
rkreling.bsky.social
Interested in…
a) taking theories out of the lab (and try to specify them to work irl)
b) computational methods (data donations, LLM content analysis)
c) media coping
d) all of the above?
Then our new HCR-paper is *just* for you! doi.org/10.1093/hcr/...

Now off to Ermoupoli beach to celebrate this 3rd publication of my PhD thesis (1 left to go! 😇) and my amazing co-authors @schoenefrauke.bsky.social @rkreling.bsky.social @felix-dietrich.de @leonardreinecke.bsky.social

Some implications:

📍Theory: Clearly conceptualize diseng & categorize cues

📍Empirical studies: Systematically compare different media

📍Design: Consider goal directedness (e.g., entertainment vs. info) & user motivation for specific media uses + prioritize agentic diseng as relevant design goal
aliciagilbert.bsky.social
(3) Relevance of media cues for disengagement:
Often no straightforward reporting of results, e.g., no disentanglement possible between

😶‍🌫️ different behaviours such as attention switch & disengagement in concepts like ad avoidance

📲 different media cues in a joint intervention/demo
aliciagilbert.bsky.social
(2) Organizing media cues for disengagement across levels of analysis:

🌌 Eclectic selection of cues across studies

📱Feature-level cues only studied for digital media

🎮 Interaction-level cues only studied for gaming (but e.g., not social media)

🎞️ Content-level cues studied most often
aliciagilbert.bsky.social
(1) Structure of the field:

📍Research centered in the US & Germany

📍Computer science most prominent so far, followed by information science & communication science

📍19% of studies with an industry partner

📍Mostly exploratory methods
📍Focus on information search & gaming media

Disengagement = users stop a media use activity in a given situation.
Whereas internal (psycho-physiological) & external context cues (e.g., temporal, spatial) have been theoretically organized, #media cues remain to be systematized.
➡️ We conducted a systematic review of 27 studies & 90 media cues.

Why do users stop a media activity?
Today I presented "101 reasons to stop: A systematic review of media cues for disengagement" at #CHIGreece2025 🏖️

The full paper - the 3rd of my PhD thesis - is now available #openaccess at

Finally, after the conference is before the conference. 🤠
Next week, our team will head to #CHIGreece2025 on beautiful Syros. 🏖️ We'll present recent work on media cues for #disengagement & on #algorithmic recommendations in music streaming - watch this space!

101 reasons to stop: A systematic review of media cues for disengagement - CHIGreece Conference 2025
In the current media environment, media platforms and the content therein are optimized for entertainment and a frictionless user experience to keep users engaged (e.g., Flayelle et al., 2023; Thorson...

#MediaPsych25 was also an excellent opportunity to get feedback on our current project on #disconnection from #messaging. It seems that situational #norm salience is the main predictor of (dis)connection - stay tuned!

Returned from this year's #MediaPsych25 conference in Duisburg with lots of inspiration, food for thought, & new ideas (note to self: no, you cannot start 2 more projects).

Got valuable feedback on my theoretical work on #disengagement - why & how do users stop exposure?
