It’s a tough time for STEM education research right now, but we are still excited to share our new PNAS paper, “Divergence in children’s gender stereotypes and motivation across STEM fields”! We have big surveys (2,765 students in Grades 1-12), 2 pre-registered studies, and open data. (1/13)

Does anyone have any favorite data visualizations that examine gender? Looking for strong examples. Thank you!

She felt that message had fallen flat last time, because students often struggle with feeling like impostors. So we got to talk about how growth mindsets can really protect you from those feelings, because you stay focused on your potential for growth rather than your current lack of skill. (6/N)

In a really fascinating part of the conversation, I asked her to share her experiences of the impostor phenomenon, and she reflected on the conversation she had with my class last semester. She had said then that she never really felt like an imposter, just a beginner. (5/N)

She talked about her team's work on training teachers to explicitly share growth mindset messages on the first day of class, like, "I love questions! Questions make me a better teacher," "I believe every student in this class can succeed and I will do my best to make that happen," (2/N)

Just filled out a web survey with a bunch of Likert-type items. The response categories were in the same order on each item, but not the order you'd expect:

fairly important
important
unimportant
very important

Pretty sure "alphabetize response categories" is not best practice in survey design.

Message to University Presidents Regarding Compliance
The purpose of this communication is to address the instruction of students in compliance with applicable law.
The Texas Tech University System and each of our universities are required to comply with both state and federal law, executive orders, and directives issued by the President of the United States and the Governor of Texas. As a public university system, our adherence to these requirements is fundamental to our responsibilities as stewards of public trust.
Current state and federal law recognize only two human sexes: male and female, as outlined in House Bill 229, Governor's Letter, and Executive Order. Therefore, while recognizing the First Amendment rights of employees in their personal capacity, faculty must comply with these laws in the instruction of students, within the course and scope of their employment.
As a system, our role is to provide clarity and guidance to administration, ensuring that each university fulfills its legal obligations. I appreciate your continued diligence in reviewing course materials, curricula, syllabi, and other instructional documents and following established procedures to make timely adjustments where needed.
I recognize that members of our community may hold differing personal views on these matters.
Regardless, in your role as a state employee, compliance with the law is required, and I trust in your professionalism to carry out these responsibilities in a m…
