I don’t believe in any kind of afterlife—there’s nothing in science to support one. But there are likely billions of civilizations in the universe, most unaware of each other’s existence. A thousand years from now, none of us will be remembered. Which makes me wonder: is any of this really worth it?

Landsat 4 was a problem child with big early failures. NASA even scheduled shuttle missions in 80s to capture it and bring it back to Earth, but they never materialized. It's been "mostly useless" since the mid-90s and basically dead in 2001. 24 years later, it finally came home... in a fireball.
