A chart depicting eleven characters who fit the "DS-style weirdgirl partner" archetype to varying degrees and notes about their designs.

Pictured are Maya Fey, Ema Skye, Trucy Wright, and Kay Faraday from the Ace Attorney series, Lynne from Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, Shiki Misaki from The World Ends With You, June, Clover, and Phi from the Zero Escape series, Aiba from AI: the Somnium Files, and Pearl from Beary the Hatchet.

The design notes are as follows:

All or Overwhelming: high school to college age, 6 to 6.5 heads tall, ~55% leg, ~30% torso, ~15% head (give or take), design is most ornate towards the torso/head ("top screen") and is simplest below waist ("bottom screen"), 3 to 4 primary outfit colors, contains at least one vivid color and one dark color balanced by a plain color, balanced design with subtle asymmetrical elements, some manner of hair tie/bun or other head accessory, skirt or dress that ends from upper to lower thigh (always above knees), knees visible, and a wrist element (bracelet, cuffs, gloves.

Most: single primary hair color, medium to long hair, dark eye color, free flowing silhouette garment (coat, scarf, ribbon, shawl), unpatterned fabrics, shape accessory (necklace, badge, orb, pin), waist color barrier, no full leggings or tights, and tall boots between calf and knee with top color barrier.

50/50: natural (dark) vs. striking hair color, hair let down vs. done up, long sleeves or not, bow-like accessory, bag/pouch resting at waist, belt serving as waist color barrier, and straight skirt vs. pleated skirt.

Uncommon or Rare: hat, two colors in hair, short or very long hair, light eye color, patterned fabrics, exposed midriff, no waist color barrier, bottom skirt color barrier, leggings/tights, and no boots.

LOL I won't lie it was definitely wing & a prayer. but also for context he was 11 when Star Wars came out & glamorized the idea of an ongoing episodic saga to a new generation

also I feel like a 6 episode plan *could've* worked with PS1 scope… but the transition to PS2/full 3D ballooned everything

but also fun fact with googleable sources: the reason Takahashi left Square to found Monolith Soft and develop Xenosaga in the first place was because Xenogears II was in planning but Square cancelled it to clear up funding for... the critically panned movie Final Fantasy: Spirits Within

I don't have a source on this so grain of salt but iirc it was Takahashi who constantly touted the "6 episode epic" plans and Namco just let him say it for marketing reasons but never actually promised six games to him, it was always tentative on sales, so I'd go with the "assumption" route

I feel like if they had the impossible foresight of hindsight a better plan would've been if 1 had no past shenanigans, 2 was entirely a prequel set in the past, and 3 was the payoff to both (in theory akin to the MGS2 (present) > MGS3 (past) setup to MGS4)

43. (watching my buddy play) Until Dawn (PS4)

the ending felt rushed & underwhelming which kinda soured me despite other parts being enjoyable. there's enough to like, but it irked me how much potential it didn't live up to. I think I might've preferred the originally intended PS3 Move version lol

42. 1917 (2019)

really liked it! technically impressive and beautifully shot, I liked just looking at it (it's filmed to appear as if it were entirely one continuous shot). excellent use of the medium, really feels like it "had to be" a movie, would've lacked punch as anything else
