Hey folks!

I’m Aaron. I’m mostly known as a podcast writer, producer, and narrator who makes things at the intersection of the spooky and the historical.

I’ve been making my award-winning podcast LORE for nearly a decade (300+ eps), so check it out (in bio) if you love folklore and weird history.

Oh Apple, you sweet summer child…

Something wicked this way comes…

(I’ll reveal the full, gorgeous cover when I have permission.)

Thanks, the team and I try our best.

Just popping in to say that, yes I am still alive, and no, I wasn’t raptured. I’ve used the last two weeks to start writing my first novel in over a decade, and am already 25% done.

I’m enjoying the clarity that comes with fewer social media interruptions, so for now I think I’ll stick with it.

I think I’ll be taking a break for a while. Sorry folks. I’m just not built for *waves hands erratically* all of this. If creativity is a fire, social media is a big ol’ bucket of cold water.

Friends who still care to say hello know how to reach me. Cheers.

Mistakes happen when you're ever so slightly dyslexic, like me. But it was fixed shortly after publishing, so give it a fresh download and enjoy the new version instead 😊

Yes, I know. It was a joke.

What is a “supernatural”?

First social gathering in a very long time means I’m feeling the desire to blend into the background and hide.

Introverts unite (but at a distance, and quietly)!!

“Forced”? You make it sound like the ads are unexpected. But the podcast industry, across the board, funds shows with ads. It’s how good, talented people get paid.

And no, iHeart doesn’t sell ad-free access to their stuff on a show-by-show basis. Or at all, as far as I can tell.

I took a walk in the woods today. Pretty chuffed with these photos.
A trail in the woods, blocked by a fallen tree. A cluster of ferns covering the forest floor. A v-shaped tree standing in the forest, with a fallen tree caught horizontally in the space between. A large tree laying in a carpet of very low green foliage.

God that’s hot.

(Get it?)

Does he think Bluesky is some sort of Congressional ChatGPT, where you type in requests and they just magically appear?

Fire RFK Jr. now.
amahnke.bsky.social
“Senator shocked to discover RFK Jr. is exactly who he claimed to be prior to his confirmation.”

It’s bricked up behind the door, and the door is anchored shut.
amahnke.bsky.social
It’s big. But the door itself is maybe 5.5” tall.

A few more shots from yesterday’s outing to see the site of Mercy Brown’s “vampire” exhumation ritual in 1892.
A gravestone marked with the name, birth date, and death date for Mercy Brown. The stone outbuilding used to store Mercy’s body after her death in January of 1892, and where the ritual exhumation of her remains most likely took place two months later. A view of the stone outbuilding in the distance, from directly beside Mercy’s gravestone (erected after he exhumation, obviously).

Social media in a nutshell…

Me: here’s a photo of my visit to a special place!

Random person: here’s a reply with an uninvited lecture on a topic that’s ever so slightly tangentially related to your post!

Finally, more than 10 years after I first told her story on Lore, I paid a visit to the grave of Mercy Brown.

Cool, now let’s do late 90’s metal covers of 80’s alternative songs!
amahnke.bsky.social
See, this is why I shouldn’t use social media after a tall glass of scotch 😂

Shawshank! And Green Mile really hit the spot, although that was technically a serialized novel. But maybe the true moral is that it’s hard to make this a black and white issue.
amahnke.bsky.social
Hm. Maybe his earlier novels were shorter? He’s just gotten so good at writing slow-burn sprawling novels that 2 hours rarely does those stories justice. I think?
amahnke.bsky.social
His best adaptations are always from his short stories, rather than his novels.

Placebo with a hint of disappointment. I bet it’s great in a G&T though.
