Investigating a Possible Scammer in Journalism’s AI Era | The Local
A suspicious pitch from a freelancer led editor Nicholas Hune-Brown to dig into their past work. By the end, four publications, including The Guardian and Dwell, had removed articles from their sites.

“Net-zero CO2 would halt temperature increase. To get it down, you need to go net negative. And then the obvious question, politically, would be, who’s going to do that?”
UN sec. gen. Antonio Guterres got it wrong when he said "Scientists tell us that a temporary overshoot above 1.5 degrees is now inevitable." Surpassing 1.5 may be inevitable, but the "temporary" part, not so much. My Q&A w/ an expert on why COPs need to confront this. heatmap.news/climate/cop-...
The Next COP Needs to Confront ‘Overshoot’
The Paris Agreement goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius is now all but impossible. Limiting — and eventually reversing — the damage will take some thought.

COP30 came to a weak conclusion. But there was concrete progress on some of the demands Indigenous peoples brought, like for land designations and direct finance. Gift link:

Since I tried to read the excerpt (yeah, dumb move, I know), it's bugged me how she uses the LA fires as a lazy metaphor for her personal life. Good to see a writer articulate the problem with that.
I cannot stop thinking about how Olivia Nuzzi turned a climate-fueled wildfire that killed people and destroyed thousands of homes into romantic mood lighting for her affair with a guy who helped put a climate denier back in power.
Climate disaster is not ambiance
Especially not for an illicit affair with a politician who helped a climate-denying administration come to power.
