Here’s more from our visit to Gripsholm last week.

This week our @erc.europa.eu project team met in Stockholm. One of the highlights was travelling to Gripsholm Castle to see Gustav III’s court theatre - an amazing survival from the 18th century. Scene cloths still hang above the stage that haven’t been lowered since the 1770s. Tantalising right?

This week we had our project meeting in Stockholm. We were considering how contemporary cultural institutions connect to their local communities. We then thought about how this may apply to our historical examples. Over the next week we’ll share some of the things we got up to. Teaser below:

Got an idea for a special issue inspired by the long 19th century around the world and its legacies?

Allow us to introduce our fantastic General Editor Effram Sera-Shriar, also in charge of our Special Issues.

For Queer History Month, David has been writing about some amateur theatre participants retrieved from the archive who contribute to our understanding of queer theatre histories in the nineteenth century. Thank you to the @erc.europa.eu for supporting this research. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

David’s work on our @erc.europa.eu funded project has involved research into various private theatres, including Adelina Patti’s at Craig-y-Nos castle. David, who organised this meeting, has come away with a far better understanding of the theatre space, how it was used and who by (yes, amateurs!).

We’ve had a remarkable two days at Craig-y-Nos castle assessing the condition of the theatre and its assets. We hope to be able to share our findings through the Society for Theatre Research, who generously funded the work. We’ll use the findings to advocate for funding to conserve the theatre.

Alongside Grit Eckert, I’ve been coordinating a group of experts to visit Craig-y-nos castle this week to consolidate what we know about the theatre, to assess its condition and to plan for its future. Thanks to the Society for Theatre Research for funds and @amateurtheatre.bsky.social for my time.

🎭 Soprano Adelina Patti was born on this day in 1843

She gives her name to a wonderful theatre in Craig Y Nos, which was added to an existing neo-gothic building by the singer and her husband

It is the most ambitious of the UK's few private theatres
