A personal note — CW: miscarriage — and looking forward In early December, right about the time I turned 43, I realized—after a week of denial because we didn’t think it possible—that for the first time ever, I was pregnant. I quickly became exhausted and ill, and things started to move fast medically, with OBGYN visits overlapping with previously scheduled unrelated medical things. My entire December involved traveling to doctor appointments. But then, a week or so later, my worst symptoms lessened. “Fluctuation is normal” I read. But something felt different. At my first ultrasound, what should have been a 5mm fetus was only 3mm, leading us to wonder if this was anomalous (bad) or simply oddly timed conception. But it seemed to have a heartbeat, a 108 bpm flutter that I saw with my own eyes. A week later, there was nothing.

I keep thinking about stuff I want to write but in the last 30 days I've had 4 different medical procedures/events and I still have two day jobs and a spouse so I'm basically just like
a man in a white hoodie and a man in a black jacket are standing next to each other on a wooden floor .

That hasn’t stopped. So I need to cut myself free from anything that isn’t an absolute necessity. For however long it takes. (I forgot to mention we’re supposed to start discussions with an architect soon regarding apartment renovations, and eventually live in a rental apartment while it’s renovated). I hope everyone has an amazing 2026. I hope in at least a small way I can help you celebrate your book releases and milestones. I just wanted to post a heads-up on that I may be scarce and why. I wanted to step away entirely, but I had previously planned responsibilities, like sharing group sale graphics, etc. I didn’t have to post stuff, but I wanted to fulfill that agreement. Now in the new year, as I begin a recovery process that might take a week or so, at least physically, I will likely, more completely, step away from online activities (for the most part) for a more extended time. Not only do I need time to myself, time to rest, I will also be having an unrelated medical procedure that will probably put me out of commission. Medically, I’m exhausted. Mid-December, I had a superficial, benign but problematic cyst on my breast removed. All is well with that. Then, I had a miscarriage. Next, I will have my pacemaker-defibrillator removed. As you can imagine, I haven’t had nor do I later expect to have the mental or physical energy to do much of anything. On top of all that, I will be starting a second part-time job this month. Personal stuff has already affected my time and energy this year in terms of finding the time and energy to write. So looking forward, despite wanting very badly to work on many projects, I don’t know if I can. And even if I do find the time or energy to write, I’m not sure I will have the time or energy to post about the fact that I found the time or energy to write. So, if you haven’t already read the books I’ve already published, this year will be the time to do so. And if you like them, let me know. I will need every bit of encouragement I can get.

ALT text continued: The plan was to return to the clinic on Jan 2, but then I started to bleed. It was just like any late period, just as the OBGYN said it would be. Luckily I wasn’t planning to go anywhere on NYE. But sitting through that dinner was rough. The next day, traveling home, the cramps became more intense. I took the Rx painkiller and made it home before the worst began. To call a natural miscarriage “like a bad period” is a horrific understatement. There were moments where I was wondering if my condition was severe enough to call the OGBYN ER hotline for advice. Despite knowing vaguely what would happen, I was not at all prepared for the sensations I would feel over the next eight hours. The bathroom was like a crime scene. Naturally, I didn’t sleep much. Despite what seemed an intense situation, my blood pressure remained perfect (I have a cuff at home), and I didn’t feel poorly aside from being underslept and cramping. So I just listened to my body and checked what I was passing to make sure it wasn’t anything concerning. In the end, I believe all was within normal first trimester miscarriage area. I kept thinking about how much more horrific the ordeal would have been had I lived in an area where suffering a miscarriage was criminalized, or if I never had had the choice on how to terminate a nonviable fetus. To go through what feels like (graphic) giving birth to chunks of your own organs and bleeding enough to wonder if you’re going to die only to be labeled a criminal for something beyond your control? Fucking. Hell. I’m very thankful to live in France where I’m safe and supported.

The second OBGYN said it was a missed miscarriage (the fetus died without any bleeding). The third, fourth, and fifth OBGYN (all at the same specialty clinic at a hospital) all agreed that it was very likely a missed miscarriage. I was given the choices of: A) help the seemingly lifeless fetus leave right away by taking a series of pills (the kind that certain people in the US want to ban despite it being perfectly safe), which would have triggered an intense miscarriage; and B) wait and see if it passes on its own. They wanted to see me in another week to see if the fetus grew, but that was xmas. So I opted for two weeks because then I would be back home from visiting family. Which meant I had two weeks to see if a proper, natural miscarriage would occur or not. I was assured that waiting was statistically safe, and that a natural miscarriage would be gentler, like a regular period. But I was given powerful painkillers, just in case. Then my jeans, which had started to become tight, once again fit just fine. Because my lower abdomen began to return to its pre-pregnancy size (though all this time I’d been bloated from taking progesterone due to initial feared ‘threatened miscarriage’ and to avoid miscarrying over xmas), my husband and I agreed that, likely, I indeed had a missed miscarriage, and all the components within my uterus were in the process of being resorbed. Before New Year’s, I started having more regular, dull cramps. But I still never bled. Until December 31.
